Show Wanted: "working" computers at San Juan High School different logins--Netwa- re and FS Login.Ifyou dont use the correct one, the Word Perfect program wont work. Often it still wont work and you have to map the connection yourself--if you are smart enough. There are even some computers that dont have By Julie Harvey Everyone has had problems with computers at SJH, but having to face such an uncooperative machine everyday is just too much. I am also pretty sure that the students and teachers that have to utilize them everyday are sick and tired of putting up with them. Complaints like; My computer is toooo slow, or I cant log on, or The printer is messed up, is part of our daily lives and teachers as well as students are tired of complaining. How hard is it to get funding to buy more modern computers? Day by day students are growing more and more impatient with these computers. They just arent going fast enough. There are times when students are in a hurry and they stand over their computers and cuss as if trying to make them go faster. Many of the problems include: taking 20 minutes to spell check page only a mere When the letters, paper. you type the screen doesnt keep up with the typing on the keyboard and you have to wait for it to do so. Some computers have at least two alf logouts so the computer has to be shut off in order to logout. What can be done about this? Why do we have to put up with it any longer? Teachers put pressure on the students about how important it is to turn in papers on time, but how can we do that if the San Juan High has it all. We have a beautiful school facility that has been exceptionally well maintained. We have a well educated, caring staff, including: teachers, counselors, secretaries, cooks, custodians and administrators. We have a schedule where we carry a great variety of class offerings. For the most part, our students are concerned about getting the well-balanc- ed best training possible and understand that for them to be successful in life they must be educated. Take a look at our school buildings inside and out and then in your mind compare them to any high school you have ever been in. From what I see (and I travel a lot with our athletic teams) we have the nicest school in our area, with the possible exception of Grand, which is new this year. Even then if you look at the rest of their facilities (football, baseball and softball fields, track and so on) they dont match up to ours. Our teachers, counselors and administrators ALL have the proper endorsements from the State of Utah. They are extremely well prepared both from an education standing and from a daily preparation point of view. Our teachers are friendly, caring and work hard at meeting students' needs. Our counseling department is simply the best; they know their job and do it very well. Our secretaries are never too busy to take the time to help, although they are always swamped with things that need to be done. Our cooks are always extra friendly and do the best they can with what they have to work with. Where else have you ever heard of cooks throwing candy every game day? The custodians keep our buildings in superb condition. Look around when you get here in the morning nice, clean and ready for another round of messy students (thats you). Administrators, well what can I say, at least one has a clue (Mr Harris). We offer an amazing array of classes. I challenge any of you to find a school any place, our size who offers the variety of curriculum that we do. At good old San Juan High you can take classes that will help you prepare for almost any profession. We offer classes to help our students to prepare for most vocational professions. Including Welding, Automotive, Electronics, Drafting, Aviation, and Home Ec. We offer all the prep course work necessary to attend any major university in the country. Atop ' Warnin g!s Usage of lab computers may prove hayardniis to one's any-thin- ninning. That way our assignments would be on time and correct and everyone will be satisfied. It's hard to decide if San Juan High is going to be high tech, low tech, or no tech. computers arent working properly and the printer is out of wack? Half the time we cant even print and the other half we cant log on. What is the problem? If the toilet seat were broken, the school would have it fixed by the next day, but computers? Oh no! We can put that off because its not that important. It hasnt San Juan High is a great place By Vice Principal John L. Thornton been that important for two years. As students, we shouldnt have to put up with that. Officials say. Officials say, " We can't do g about it," but why can't it the resposibility of the Is they? students to fix the equipment? Is it the teachers job? NO! It is the district and the schools job to take care of those things. They need to take the time to fix them and keep these computers all the others, we have CEU as a grand partner, allowing us boocoo (beaucoup) concurrent enrollment classes. We have a grand diversity in our student population. San Juan High school has students from several ethnic backgrounds, thus allowing us the opportunity to enjoy associa- tion with a unique medley of staff and students. Unfortunately, most of us get so busy complaining about what we wish we had, that we dont take the time to look around to see the good. I for one, think SJHS is great, maybe you should take another look. The Rattler would love to hear from you! Send your comments, compliments or complaints to: SJHS Rattler-Sa- n Juan High School 311 N. 100 E. Blanding, UT 845 1 1 or leave them in "The Rattler Box" in the East English Lab. Computers 101 is really Patience 290 By Sandra Clarke It's almost midnight. The journalism staff sits, weary-eyewaiting for a fifteen minute print job, a file to reload or for Mrs. Wilcox to give answers to computer problems. This is a familiar scene for The Rattler staff and brings bad memories to many kids at SJH. The computer dilemmas at San Juan High School wreak havoc on teachers and students on a daily basis. A specialist was hired by the district, but upon attempting to fix problems in the school, was told not to bother; new, advanced computers are being purchased. However, district paperwork is notoriously slow. Meanwhile, what is a poor journalism editor to do? What are English students and teachers, to do? Shouldn't student time be considered more valuable? SJH is the computer capital of San Juan County. Sadly, before we can celebrate our technological proficiency, we must first be able to access these programs. The infamous call to "SAVE EVERYTHING- - the file server will be going down" no longer causes, panic or even surprise. Even though we enjoy a wide variety of technology classes at SJH, there is a flip side; we endure a wide variety of technology problems as well. d, ' ijdfriEinTrrwin in.
