Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday December 4, 1996 FROM THE COACH'S BOX Next seven games on the road San Juan drops home opener to Page, This team will go a Farr way. Led by a new head coach for the first time in 20 years, the San Juan High School boys basketball team opened the new season by hosting a tough team from Page, Arizona on November 30. The result was a loss for the Broncos. However, there were several indications that once this team works out the bugs, it will win a number of tough 48-4- 1 games. We lead. After one quarter of play, Page held a 14-- lead. That shot took some of the wind out of our sails, said Farr. Page extended the lead to at the close of the third quarter, but the Broncos opened the final minutes with a scoring run that cut the Page lead to However, four points was as close as the Broncos could get as Page fought off the Bronco attack and gained win. the Page defeated San Juan last season by a last-secon- d 24-1- 9 36-2- 9 met our defensive goals, which were to hold Page to less than 40 percent field goal shooting and keep them below 50 points, said new Bronco coach Derek Farr. The Broncos fell behind in the first quarter and were unable to overcome the early deficit, even though there were several scoring runs slow-pace- that narrowed the Page second d which she had no child) which required some extra attention. The difference this individual made to the students in this class was amazing. She reached students who, because of past situations, I felt had a hardened and relationship with me. She is responsible for helping some of my students pass English for the first time in a half. Its obvious to me that our classrooms could benefit as much from volunteer support as our ball fields, and I hope parents realize how much of a difference they can make. As for what all this has to do with athletics, next quarter you may see some eighth Page 10 36-3- 3. 48-4- 1 13-poi- Juan 48-4- 1 include by Ron Nielson Raymond Mose with four, Cory Ilalli-da- y with three, and Troy Stevens with two. The Broncos are led by five seniors, Mexican, Bennett, Mose, Halliday, and Jason Workman. Mexican and Bennett offer height and athletic ability inside. Workman is expected to live up to his name with strong workman-likgames. Mose and Halliday anchor the guard line. Stevens, a 6'6" junior, will provide strength and height off the bench. A talented group of sophomores are led by Nieves, Nathan e Spottedelk, and Brad Thornton. The Broncos are on the road for the next seven games, covering six weeks, before returning for their next home game in mid-Januar- y. margin. The Broncos were led by senior Tate Bennett, who scored 18 points. AJ Mexican scored ten points and led the team in assists. Farr praised the efforts of sophomore Ronnie Nieves, who came off the bench to spark San Juan with four offensive rebounds and four points. Other scorers for San Farr said he is anxious to take the Bronco show on the road, We have a strenuous trained on the research schedule which will give ample opportunity to work out the kinks. With plenty of road time, we should be ready for Region 13 play. pre-seaso- know there is an unwritten code forbidding a coach from bringing academics into an athletic setting, but this time Im going to take my chance. It is not uncommon to see parents volunteer their time and talents to athletics. Volunteer coaches and advisors are found on almost every coaching staff in our communities, and I honor these individuals for the positive difference they make. However, seeing a parent in a middle school or senior high school classroom is not nearly as frequent. Especially, after the past three weeks, I believe that parents are needed in our classrooms as much as on our ball fields. The past month, a fellow teacher and myself asked parents of eighth grade students to help us complete history fair research papers. About 25 parents were I n cal-luse- year-and-- a- graders learning valuable lessons by wrestling or playing basketball, eligible to participate for the first time.
