Dear Editor: Being in the trenches and on the front line of healthcare, we have been forewarning as many people as possible of the inherent dangers of expedient Medicare tinkering. We recently asked Utahns if they really understood the impact of the proposed $270 billion cut Congress was considering. Most responses were of disbelief that such reductions would ever happen and accused us of defend- ing self-interest-s. Well, it is happening right now. When the message is understood, it is alarming. We have documentation of the projected Utah Medicare reductions of both House and Senate versions and it doesnt look good. The reduction would be at least $351 million for Utah by 2002. How many Utah businesses would stay open if they lost low-cos- $900 each on half of their customers? Not only will some hospitals close, but the travesty is that many lives will be affected. Our hope now is for some compromise until a better long range solution is found. Poll after poll shows people dont want Medicare taken to pieces.
