Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 5, 1995 DUST TO DUST In our nursery there is an embroidered picture of a mother rocking a baby. The accompanying verse is taken from a poem by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton. Song for a Fifth Child Cleaning and scrubbing can wait for tomorrow, for babies grow up, weve learned to our sorrow. So settle down cobwebs, dust go to sleep; Im rocking my baby, and babies dont keep. It is obvious I believe in the of this sweet litphilosophy tle verse, not only because it is where I can see it daily; but because it is rather dusty. And so is everything else in my house. Ive heard of people who mop their kitchen floor when their feet start sticking to it At our house, that would be at least twice a -- Page 10 lingers in the air keep a clean house. My mother taught me well. Its rather like the woman from Monticello who said, I always thought I was an incompetent housekeeper. Then my children grew up and left home, and really could I found I keep an orderly home." My neighbor keeps a clean house, but her basement has stacks of valuable treasures destined for storage. She claims if her house ever caught on fire she would meet the firemen at the front door and beat them off with a broom. Shes completely serious. Some days I feel the same way. I love having a clean home. When everything is in its place the faucets are shiny; the stove has new foil on the burners; and the smell of duster spray - I feel like a queen in a castle. Im sweet to my husband; nice to my kids, and I cant until somehelp singing one tracks in mud, or spills their drink. With a lot of little children the mess is - inevitable. In a way, when the house is at a constant level of disorder, so is my temperament. My patience seems drawn out by the knowledge that a creative mess is better than idle tidiness; and that there is always tomorrow. Sometimes, when Ive gone to bed so tired I dont care what Ive left undone, I dream I am cleaning my house. In my dream there isnt a baby in my arms, or a toddler tugging at my leg. I am able to go about my work unhindered. Its a to wake disappointment up and find last nights dishes still waiting in the sink. When this happens, I remember the years when the housework was done by 10 a.m. every day, and there were no mysterious objects lurking under the refrigerator. It was then I dreamed someone left a baby at my doorstep. In the dream, I held and loved the baby, marveling over the joy that a child can bring. When I woke, and the child was gone, the deprivation and emptiness I felt cannot be described. Phyllis Diller said: Cleaning the house while kids are still growing, is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing. Its true. It is also true that there are more important things than a clean house. Rocking a baby is definitely one of them. Read ing a story to a preschooler is another. Taking a walk with an older child also qualifies. Every mother that housework knows waits. Children dont. darlings, know that this dust on the furniture is for you. You can even finger paint and write in it if youd like. Likewise, the dishes get done only because we have so few of them, and we need them for the next meal. I wont confess as to how often the bed sheets get changed. I could say it is more often than my boys think is necessary, but that isnt saying much. My dad used to silence my childish protests of Do I have to? with, No, you dont have to - you get to. It is a wise approach, but my approach to housework has evolved into, I dont get to -until I have to.
