This disease is characterized by flulike symptoms followed by difficulty breathing. The disease results from exposure to rodents. Hantavirus infection is spread by inhaling the virus, which is in the droppings, urine and saliva of these animals. The disease is spread from rodent to rodent through bites. The common deer mouse appears to be responsible for the spread of the disease in most of the U.S. Other rodents can also be infected with the virus, but in much smaller numbers.
