Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 28, 1993- - Pago 2 Editorial Only ONE voice ... but, Adlai Stevenson once said, "I yield to no man in my belief in the principle of free debate. The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions. But there is also a moment at which democracy must prove its capacity to act. Every man has a right to be heard; but no man has the right to strangle democracy with a single set of vocal cords." Writers of editorials occasionally take the opportunity to use the written word as the "voice" of a community or even their own ideas. Hopefully they are met with positive reactions, but all writers know that is not always the case. Fred Friendly, when he was in charge of NBC, once said. "The purpose of an As editorial is to get people to think! Nothing else." If editorials in this paper, or any others, do nothing but get readers thinking on their own, and occasionally move them to act in the interest of a cause ... then democracy and San Juan County is well served. And the role of this editorial page as "only one voice" is affirmed. coached the Moab team, Mel Laws coached the Blanding Letters To The Editor The Record welcomes letters from its readers on any subject of public interest.
