Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday January 13, 1992 Page 2 A Suggestion for the Legislature Every year the state takes a few days to see what new laws and regulations the minds of its legislators can come up with. They never repeal as many, laws as they enact, the volumes of laws just keep growing and growing ... becoming shelves and bookcases in so themselves. It is actually quite scary to think that several hundred people are spending weeks and months developing new laws for us to run into, run afoul of and get entangled in. It is hard enough to keep up with what we have, let alone keep up with all the new ones. Therefore, we would offer this suggestion to the legislators: For every new law passed, why not take an old one off the hooks! This would be a good housekeeping tool as well as a way to keep some of the old Blue Laws from embarrassing us in a few years. Remember hearing about the law in Idaho which doubled your taxes if you didnt read a chapter of the Bible every day? or the one which legally allowed women to only lift 60 pounds? We have a few weeks until the danger season once again comes upon us, when the legislature convenes. Hopefully they will take this lone suggestion to heart and help themselves as well as the citizens of Utah. Let it snow, let it snow Whether you call it crystallized sunshine, nasty white stuff or some other more colorful metaphor, all this snow is exactly what we need. But some may not want to hear that. Winter, in most parts of the country means snow, and in San Juan County it means blowing snow. After so many years of drought, or near drought, conditions, it should be remembered the snowpack means water in the summer. Our reservoirs need to be filled in order for us to have water this summer. So, when we cuss the driving conditions, complain about the sidewalks and driveways being filled with the white stuff ... we should remember that a few good storms will replenish that necessity H2O. Cold noses bring warm hearts a band of During the snowstorm Monday good Samaritans were out shoveling sidewalks, drives, roofs and accessways for several homes in Monticello. While the cold breeze probably made for chilly noses, the well wishes of those they helped brought warm hearts. We also would like to salute those who helped. We would print your names here if we had a list, but the important thing is they know who they acts of kindness are often are and the sweetest kind. If not, what is my reward? So, please consider only encourages people to wait until December 31 to pay their medical bills at these facilities, with the idea that the same offer will be made this year (1993). Marilyn Lyman Dear Editor, Im still trying to decide what my reaction should be to the Holiday Discount ad from San Juan County Healthcare Services in the December 16 issue. They offer a 20 percent discount to anyone who owes money to the Hospital, Birthing Center, or Urgent Care Center if paid by December 31, 1992. Is this not backwards? Usually a discount is offered to people who pay early or within agreed terms rather than those who have chosen not to pay. Does this mean that because I paid at the time service was rendered I can expect a refund of perhaps 20 to 40 percent? Monticello Elementary School, we would like to express our concerns about the present and especially the future safety of the elementary school children. Our specific concerns are: Irregular, sporadic and unsafe traffic before 1) and after school in front of the building. This traffic will only get worse as the road is used more as a thoroughfare going to the church when is gets in full use. 2) Lack of crosswalks in front of the school or any where else where our children are walking. 3) No legal School Zone signs ... especially now that the road in front of the school in no longer a dead end street. New laws have gone into effect (please read the arti- cle in this paper to update yourself, on beneficial new state laws). that a serious accident or injury may occur if the above items are not addressed. Since September, the PTA and Mr. Taylor have attempted to work with the City to get the necessary crosswalks and new legal signs. So far, we have been We are concerned Dear Editor, During the course of the past month or so, we have received an abundance of moisture. As I recall, thats what we have so desperately hoped and prayed for. When we are watering our lawns, and gardens this summer, we will most likely forget about the slush in our boots, the buried shovel, and the mountains of snow in our parking spots. But, we sure will be thankful for that nice glass of water. I am a little surprised at the negative attitudes of people who are inconvenienced over the rain and snow. Sure, it is miserable and difficult to get around in, but so precious at the same time. I feel that the County and City crews have done a wonderful job doing their best at keeping up with the snow removal. I am also sure that they are taking a lot of heat from many people as well. Remember, the guy who drives the plow also has to go home and shovel his driveway approach. Under these circumstances, I feel as if we should pull up our boot straps, bite our tongue and count our blessings. Let it snow! Rona Flannery Blanding, UT ! Petitions will be out and members of the PTA presidency will be at the City Council Meeting tonight to look for a strong commitment from the City.
