Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 17,' 1991 - Page 2 Seminar on how to identify and prevent child sexual abuse draws large crowd Child sexual abuse is a serious problem in Utah, according to Scotti Davis, president of the Utah Chapter for the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse. Davis was in Monticello last week speaking at a seminar on child sexual abuse and how to prevent it, how to treat children who have been abused, and how to identify adult abusers and bring them to justice. Education is the best way to help these children, Davis said. In Utah reported cases of child sexual abuse increased have nearly 10 times in the past 20 years. She believes these statistics do not reflect an increase in abuse, but rather indicate that more abused children are being discovered and helped. Davis was joined at the seminar by Marilyn Johnson, a nurse, and Helen Britton, a pediatrician, both members of Primary Chil drens Medical Centers Emergency Child Abuse Britton and Johnson trained nurses and emergency medical personnel in ways to identify injuries that result from abuse in contrast to normal childhood accidents. They presented guidelines for gathering evidence of child abuse to help build court cases against perpetrators of abuse. They also showed video tapes illustrating some differences in the actions of Team. normal children being raised in a safe environment in contrast to children who are in a potentially harmful or abusive environment. For example, according to Dr. Britton, many children who will be abused by their parents can be identified in the delivery room if an alert nurse or doctor knows the signs of potential child abuse. One such way is how the mother interacts with the child.
