Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday March 6, 1991 Dons Valle Our San Juan River no longer requires my close supervision. Well, perhaps it didnt anyway, but it was so iced up and mudded up and in general confused that thought if I I didnt check every day, it might really get out of hand. Out of banks? There are still random patches of snow and ice, and a few blocks of frozen silt but in general its back doing business in its own in- imitable fashion. Just rolling along, offering river runners a nice ride with not much in the way of thrills Steve Lonie and chills. from Prescott, Arizona, just put in for a seven-datrip, and anticipates no problems so long as the night campfires burn brightly to couny teract a persistent cold wind. Our frozen floats have made their way downstream, perishing en route we hope. We did keep watch on the narrow channel here by the Mexican Hat bridge but the icy traffic observed courtesy of the river and proceeded in an orderly fashion. However, Norris Cly reported that a sheet of ice got tangled up with the Sand Island bridge at Bluff the other day, blocking the current and backing up water into the cottonwood trees at the boat landing. On the reservation, Navajo livestock is again grazing rather than wading, although there was a hungry period. The Tribe brought hay in to Oljato, and it was given to those with recorded stock and grazing permits. Every summer stock is counted and given Horses and injections. cows are branded. Only sometimes a Navajo just doesnt get around to taking care of the details, and the unfortunate uncounted animals were not eligible for free hay. I may have to see my dentist soon as I keep grinding my teeth in frustration. and Hiking camping weather is almost here hut none of us are patient as snow melts slowly and leaves a foot deep layer of mud where it lay. Everyone keeps rushing the season, remembering better days when the southeast corner of Utah was a haven for snow weary northerners. One Salt Lake camping group managed to ford the hazardous creek between Comb Wash Road and the bottom of Eish Creek Canyon. They urged a Bronco Blazer through the mud and ice and up that nasty bank south of the corral hut just how they managed to accomplish that feat is a good question. remember once Cary Topping and I rode a jeep down and a 1 into that crossing and spent an hour trying to get out up either bank - that was under good conditions. havent tried anything I I traded my alone yet. trusty little four wheel drive pickup in on a van with all wheel drive and it makes me nervous.
