Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Playground injuries can be reduced The Southeastern Utah District Health Department is its second year of a playground injury reduction program for elementary schools. During the first year, the program was focused on Carbon County schools. Schools in San Juan and Emery counties have been added to the program this year. Georgina Nowak, health educator and injury prevention coordinator for the Health Department, said, The program is emphasizing a change of attitude. Instead of accident, the term being used is injury. The idea is that injuries are predictable and preventable. To help prevent playground injuries, the program is focusing on the playground and the education of everyone involved in the use of playgrounds, including children, teachers, maintenance personnel and parents. As part of the program every elementary school teacher in Ive heard there is a new type of surgery to cure nearsightedness. Does it work? Is it safe? A. The ' surgical procedure being touted as a cure for nearsightedness is called radial keratotomy. It is 'still 'in the experimental stages. It involves making 8 to 16 freehand cuts in the outside surface of the eye to flatten it and thus reduce nearsightedness. There is no way to predict accurately what the results will ! is given a playground curriculum guide which provides safety lessons for children. Playgrounds are inspected to identify hazards, and observations are made of the children playing on- the equipment to identify behaviors that need changing. Nowak said she is working The United States 'Senate unanimously approved legislation on June 6 sponsored by Senator Jake Gam to designate Westwater Canyon and Cataract Canyon as Utahs first Wild and Scenic Rivers to - help promote tourism and economic development in with school district main- tenance supervisors and individual school custodians to correct playground hazards. Among the more common hazards that have been identified are the S hoods, seats on swings, protruding bolts, and rough surfaces on equipment. More injuries occur on climbing apparatus than other typies of playground equipment, explains Nowak. Many of these injuries can be prevented by better supervision, increasing the amount ofsurface sand, and teaching children safe playground play habits. The program has made a difference, Nowak said. For without adequate supervision, or no supervision at all. While no program will ever eliminate playground injuries, Nowak said the program now underway will go a long way toward limiting injuries, if everyone does their part. If you have questions about the efforts to improve playground safety in your area, please call Nowak at the Price office of the Health Depart- ment, 637-367- 1. be. Studies show some people, usually the mildly nearsighted, do achieve near normal vision. Others do not and must still wear glasses. Some are overcorrected and become farsighted. Still others have vision that fluctuates. Increased sensitivity to glare seems to be a side Thirteen students from San Juan five-wee- summer program at the College of Eastern Utah San Juan Center!
