These Navajo parents deserve the highest of praise for their willingness to improve the educational program for their children. The school is now gaining a new distinction as one of the model schools in the state for parent volunteer involvement. Regina Partain, the mother of a third grade student, has served as the organizing force of a program which is rapidly proving that language and cultural differences do not necessarily keep parents from becoming a vital part of the school program. This fall over 40 parents volunteered to assist the school in its efforts to provide quality education for their children. The volunteer activities range from tutoring children to caring for the children of other parents who are volunteering in the school. Volunteers assist the school secretary and teachers in many of their routine tasks. This year the entire registration process for the school was completed by the volunteers. Not to be outdone, Principal Clayton Long is volunteering his services as a Navajo language instructor so that teachers in the schools of the area can learn some basic Navajo, as well as gaining some perspective on the Navajo culture. The volunteer program in Montezuma Creek also demonstrates what can be done if community businesses become involved in school programs. Local businesses have provided direct donations and support in the form of prizes for the many fund raising efforts which the volunteer organization sponsors. The College of Eastern Utah demonstrates its support of the program by offering college credit for the volunteers. The schooling of the children in Montezuma Creek has thus become a partnership effort of the school, the parents and the business community. Chairman Partain and her able assistants, Vivian Todacheenie and Kathryn Collins, are not resting on their laurels. Already in the works are several ambitious plans to increase the number of volunteers and to develop a training program for volunteers. Peggy Frisby, the head of the Utah State Volunteer Program, commented on the Montezuma headlined ceremonies to dedicate newly completed Interstate 70 between Richfield and Sigurd on September 26 at the South Richfield interchange. interstate The eleven-mil- e section is the final link in across the state.
