Staff members of Blue Mountain Shadows , a local historial publication, were notified last week of the honor. Delmont Oswald, UEH executive director, said the San Juan County Project was . . deemed to be one of the most successful in achieving its goals, and an outstanding example of how folklore and oral history can be used in public programming. The awards were given during a meeting on American Folklore in which Josephine Bayles and Lucy Harris shared true tales of life in early Blanding and their memories of the past. The Blue Mountain Shadows project consisted of three parts; oral interviews and research; public programming to share information; and the writing and publishing of information learned. San Juan High School students Kim Hurst, Deniane Gutke, Gipp Redd, Laura Shum-way- , Regina Yazzie, Annette Carroll, Thelma Tate, and adults Bertha Parrish and Anna Marie Nat formed the core group during the summer of 1987. Bob McPherson and K. C. Benedict, both members of the Utah State Historical Quarterly Board of Directors, served as trainers and supervisors. Fiscal officer was LaVeme Tate of the San Juan Historical Commission. All 500 copies of Volume I of the Blue Mountain Shadows magazine sold. Volume II is scheduled for printing March 1. Three articles in the spring issue one by Mike Hurst, one Hilda Perkins and one by by will Gary Shumway, PhD. focus on Bluff history. There will be an article on the Joe Lyman of Cedar Mesa Pottery in Blanding is one of four Utah men nominated for a small business advocate award. Announcement of his nomination was made as part of the Utah State Legislatures Small Business Day. Other articles include essays on home remedies, entertainment in the good old days, Oz Hunts horse race, and CCC camps of San Juan, Part II. Director Wilcox say LaVerne Tate has compiled an excellent collection of historic photos to accompany the articles. Volume II should be even better than Volume I, says Wilcox. Valley auction Slaughter bulls sold for $61.35 to $63.75 on February 17 at Valley Livestock Auction in Fruita, Colorado. Slaughter cows sold for $40.75 to $63; cow and calf pairs for up to $700; and lambs for up to $77.75. Steers, calves and yearlings, weighing 300 to 400 pounds sold for $104.50 to $115; 500 to 600 pounds for $88.25 to $96.50; 600 to 700 pounds for $78 to $87.20.
