Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday May 28, 1986 - Page 18 Bluff Stuff Dorothy Nielson 1986 big game seasons announced An earlier application period for draw permits, one buck for archery hunters and nonresident elk limited area permits top the list of 1986 big game season changes. The Utah Board of Big Game Control set 1986 hunts in a marathon meeting Saturday. June 15 through July 8 is set as the application period for deer, elk, antelope and moose draw permits, allowing hunters more time between the drawing and when hunts begin. Applications will be available by June 15 anywhere licenses are sold and will be accepted by mail only. The big game or combination license tag will be used for most deer hunts, including archery. Archers will not be allowed to take two buck deer. Archery hunters unsuccessful in taking a buck during deer archery season can hunt during the general deer season to fill their tag. Archers can now apply for anterless control permits. For the first time, nonresidents can apply for limited area bull, limited area hunters choice, limited area anterless and elk muzzle-loade- r permits. Cost varies from $150 to $200. Limited area bull hunts are considered by many to be top trophy elk hunting opportunities equal to any in the west. The Board also added more limited entry and deer hunts, created deer hunters choice hunts, three-point-or-bett- er approved nearly 10,000 anterless control permits and limited nonresident to 10 percent of available draw permits. Heres a rundown of season dates: Antelope, buck: September and September 6-1- 20-2- 9. 18-2- r, 8; 1-- 9. 4; muzzle loader, September Moose: As specified in proclamation. The drawing will be 13-2- 1. August 1, 1986. Bowhunters Deer hunters pursuing game with archery equipment will get two opportunities to hunt for one buck deer this fall. Archers who purchase a deer archery permit can hunt during deer archery season, and if unsuccessful can return to the field during the general deer season to fill their tag. Only one tag will be issued the big game or combination license tag. Early reports that indicated archers would have to choose a season mislead many hunters, according to Division of Wildlife Resources officials. Hunters should read the big game proclamation carefully. They will be available in mid- - June, anywhere licenses are sold. Two other noteworthy changes: Archers can now apply for deer anterless control permits and applications for all draw permits is June 15 through July 8.
