Writing contest for students The Salt Lake Tribune and the Utah State Poetry Society are sponsoring a writing contest for Utah students in grades seven through twelve. Rules have been mailed to school principals throughout the state. The entry deadline is February four-cours- Codner youth on TV In the short story and poetry competition, students in grade 10 through 12 will compete in the senior division. Students in grades 7 through 9 will compete in the junior division. In the junior short story and junior poetry categories, first place winners will receive gold medallions, $20 cash and honor Janae Codner, granddaughter of John and Devon Codner of Monticello, will be featured on Prime Time Access, KSLTV, Monday, December 23 at 6:30 p.m. Janae, daughter of John and Nancy Codner of Provo, played the Beethoven First Piano Concerto with the Utah Symphony as part of its 26th annual Salute to Youth concert in wincertificates. Second-placners will receive silver medallions, $15 cash and certificates. e winners will ceive bronze medallions, Symphony Hall. Janae, who started playing the piano at age 32 soloed with the Utah Valley Symphony on its Young Artists Night last January. Not only that, she has first-plac- e awards from two re- $10 cash and certificates. Senior division winners in both categories will receive medallions and certificates plus $30 cash for first place, $20 for second place and $15 for third place. A sweepstakes award of a gold trophy and $25 cash will be awarded to students in both junior divisions who place first, second or third in both the short-stor- y and poetry categor- ies. Merchant Christmas ads Ross E. Codner of Eastland passed away December 2, 1985. He was bom December 9, 1925 the youngest of three children of John E. and Elva Nielson Codner. He was raised in the Lockerby area east of Monticello and drove a truck all his life. Interment was in Eastland. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his brother John E. of Monticello and sister Charlotte Miller of California.
