TAX SHELTERS i The term tax shelter has been used and misued to get into the wallets of many high -- bracket taxpayers . True tax shelters possess one or more of the following elements: 1. Special tax credits for a particular type of investment 2. The conversion of ordinary income to long-ter.capital m high-brack- 'AHS FRIENDLY SHOPPINGto CENTER on hand. stock securities A tax shelter can be as simple as postponing the receipt of income to a future year, the use of accelerated depreciation, or various other tax reduction techniques. The term tax shelter, however, has taken on the connotation of being something so sophisticated that it is beyond the comprehension of the average person and possibly the individual selling ' it. et Most taxpayers have been approached by tax shelter salespeople. Some of thes proposals are legitimate investment schemes designed to maximize benefits under the tax laws. Some, unfortunately, are designed almost solely for the benefit of the promoters. A tax shelter should not be viewed as satisfactory simply because the promoters have permissionfrom the Securities authorities to sell their product. Know what you are buying, know who you are buying it from, and check references of the promoter and the selling company. Even though you may be investing in a limited partnership (a common tax she Iter entity), you may be signing letters of credit or other obligations which could increase your true financial losses beyond your initial investment. A good tax shelter salesperson will involve your financial and tax advisors in your investment decisions. ' Baseball Cleats! Jtles. No sales to dealers. Each part of the label has a special function, as a whole, the label is designed to speed processing at service centers and prevent common errors that delay issuance of refund checks, according to Bill Craig; public affairs officer of the Salt Lake City District of the IRS. When a return is received at an IRS Center, it eventually winds op in the hands of a data transcriber who types the taxpayer's name, address and Social Security number on a machine which enters this and other information directly into the centers computer. Craig said that if the returnhas a label on it, the data transcriber knows the information is already in the computer and can make an abbreviated entry. If there is no label, it takes almost twice the work for the same result, Craig said. IRS officials urge taxpayers to use the peel-o- ff label to save millions of taxpayers dollars and speed up processing of refund checks. "Characters must be kept bright as well as clean."
