Among the most common febrile conditions that produce seizures are throat and ear infections and roseola, baby measles. Sometimes these convulsions occur when the fever is at its highest, but at other times they take place before the temperature just rises. Although febrile seizures are a serious nature, they are most distressing for parents to watch. Short febrile seizures - those that last less than 10 minutes do not result in brain damage. Of all the children who experience febrile seizures, only three to six percent will percent epilepsy. Prolonged develop seizures, however, could cause brain damage. Fabrile convulsions most commonly occur from ages six months to three years. They occur alter age three, and rarely are almost unheard of after age five. Studies show that the peak occurs around 18 incidence months of age. If the child has more than three febrile convulsions or if one occurs after age three, the seizures might stem from a serious condition. Statistics reveal that 40 percent of children who have a seizure wiU experience a second one, and half of these will experience a third one. Ten percent of seizure victims will experience another one within 24 hours of the first one. Fifty percent will have another one within six months, and 70 percent will another one within one year.
