Outside the tent in the s mall clearing, a campfire smouldered and by the open tent flap a stump held a wash basin, while on the ground near it sat a bucket of water. These last two objects proved to te the only plumbing facilities on the premises. Over the campfire a very young woman expertly handled an iron bake-ovin which all the family cooking was en done. The only thing elegant or luxurious about the entire abode was the sweet peace and quiet and the fact that the couple there owned that little hunk of land and all that was on it, including the brown cow tethered close by. Perhaps the most remarkable thing as seen through the sophisticated eyes of 1980 was the happiness and contentment of that couple, with each other and this primitive place they called homo. One small child toddled about and claimed their attention and part of their happiness. As the sun sank beyond the cedars and darkness settled in, their only light came from their campfire until it was carefully banked to smoulder through the night and be ready for cooking breakfast. Of course, that was 75 years ago and those daring young people who braved that howling wilderness to make their home had not the slightest idea of the absolute necessities of todays young people as they venture into homemaking. It would be foolish to enumerate all those needs they are well known, but to bring a comparison we will mention just a few: wife cried in It isnt great distress: fair! Everybody has a TV but A young I have to spend half my time tending little Joe when he could just as well watch TV and leave me free to do something useful. One woman, still younger, moaned that without a microwave oven she was simply tied in the kitchen and had no time to watch TV. Oh, the harsh tragedy! Still another wife was terribly put out that her diaper service was late and she had had to buy whipies. Such agonizing hardships are enough to make one heartsick. Divorces have occurred over these kinds of tragLives of couples edies. and their children have been dented and scarred. One wonders what it is that couples fall in love with, each other, or the material things they hope to possess. A recent newspaper claimed that hard times are driving families back together again. As they discover their inability to get everythingthey want, they find each other and the values each has to offer, that have been overlooked in the scramble for things far less valuable.
