The next day they went over Wolf Creek pass and on to Hugoton, Kansas, where Pep Redd gave them a tour of his huge feed yard; the guests were impressed with this huge operation. Next day they drove to Independence and Liberty, Missouri, where they visited the John Lewises and talked to Milt Rogers on the phone. They then went to Kirksville, Missouri, to attend the graduation of the Alexanders son - inlaw, Sam Schurig, from medical school. Sam is married to their daughter Pam, and they have three children. From Kirksville they went to and spent Nauvoo, Illinois, two nights, seeing the sights and many monuments of historical interest. At Niles, Ohio, Sam and Pam and children will live for the next year while he does his interning, after which he expects to join the Air Force as a flight surgeon. The Alexanders then went on to Niagara Falls and to Palmyra, Hill Cumorrah and Sacred Grove in New York City, 78th Street, through the down center of Harlem, 34th Street across Broadway, and down Fifth Avenue. They visited Horton and Clara Nielson. Here they left their car and took a bus down to the financial district and Wall Street to the Battery, the gateway to the Atlantic. They ferried to the Statue of Liberty and got on an elevator to the arm of the statue. They didn't get to the top of the statue as the line of people waiting for a turn was too long. They went to Manhattan and took the subway uptown. They then traveled to Washington, D.C., and took a session at the temple. They visited a number of points of interest. One of the outstanding sights was the aerospace where they saw a museum, of the space shuttle replica which was used in the moon program. They also visited the Smithsonian Institution. They went back to Niles, and on to Kirtland, Ohio, where they saw the Kirtland Temple and the old Newel K. Store and Emma Whitney Smith's old kitchen, where O-h- io, several historical things Western Family Homestyle Biscuits Hiland Cottage Cheese Velveeta Cheese We wQ be Closed for the 4th of July fflOMFJCEii oz. 31 m hap- pened. They then went through Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota. In the Rapid City area they heard tornado warnings on the radio but didn't see any. They went to Mount Rushmore but the weather was so foggy they couldn't see the famous faces carved on the mountain. They then went through Colorado Springs and on home. They were gone three weeks and said they didn't have any gasoline problems. In New York City they saw the Trades building which is taller than the Empire State Building, and in Chicago they saw the Sears Towers, which is the tallest of them all. Their friends are glad to see them home again all safe and sound. |
