Show Highway mishaps claim two lives Traffic accidents claimed two lives in San Juan County during the past week, and two other persons suffered serious injuries in separate mishaps. Mrs. Louise Newbold, 70, of Midvale, died last Saturday when the 1975 pickup truck in which she was a passenger about 12 overturned on miles east of Hite. The annual parade will be held on the Fourth of July, Monday, with other events scheduled for that day as well as on the preceding Friday and Saturday. Among the scheduled events are an Indian pow-wo- an s Anything-goe- w, rodeo, contest, marathon run, swimming competition, and jeep and motorcycle competition. highlight of the Monday program will be a fireworks display that night, for which tickets will be sold. The vehicle was towing a and trailer apparently camping went out of control, veering off the right side of the road and then back to the left before overturning. The victim was thrown from the vehicle and died of head injuries at the scene. Newbold was taken to San Juan Hospital in Monticello, where he was treated for lacerations and shock and released. Sheriff Rigby Wright said the accident was witnessed by the victims son, who was in another vehicle in front of the pickup carrying his parents. Sheriff Wright and Deputy Jack Kirby investigated the accident. National Park Service personnel from Hite arrived at the scene and gave first aid until officers arrived. The second fatality occurred on Tuesday of this week about five miles south of Blanding on Highway 163. The victim was Fred M. Borwell, 55, of Carefree, Arizona. State Trooper Jim Pehrson, who investigated the crash, said Borwell was headed north about 2:15 in the afternoon when his 1972 Blazer went off the right side of the road, then went out of control and overturned twice. The victim was thrown through the windshield and died of head injuries at the scene. The Pioneer Days parade will be held on Saturday, July 23, with prizes to be awarded Story hour Last week, Judy Chase and Benita Schaugaard presented the stories to the children at the Monticello library. They used pets and puppets as very effective props. Around 40 children enjoyed the stories. This Thursday, Eileen Walker and Edna Toponce will do the stories. The subject will be Fathers. in the following categories: most beautiful, most humorous, most appropriate to the theme, and most original. for the parade are Pat Howell and Vic Schafer. A children's parade will precede the regular parade, with Diane Jones as chairCo-chair- woman. The Pioneer Days queen contest, sponsored by ESA Beta Delta, will be held on Friday, June 24. Highlights of the Pioneer Days program on Friday, July 22, wiU include the annual rodeo, sponsored by the Monticello Jaycees, and a dance that night, starting at 9 p.m., also sponsored by the Jaycees. A carnival also is on the Saturday schedule, with Doug Boyle as chairman. Anyone interested in having booths at the carnival is asked to contact Doug. Children from Monticello will be bussed to Blanding this summer for swimming, as the Monticello pool is closed for the season because of the water shortage. The bus schedule will begin next Monday, June 20. The busses will leave promptly on the scheduled times from the Monticello swimming pool. Here is the schedule for each day: Mondays: children up to the 6th grade. Tuesdays: Those in the seventh grade and older. Wednesdays: those up to the 6th grade. Thursdays: those in the 7th grade and older. Busses will leave at 2:30 each of the four afternoons. Cost will be 50 cents for children and $ 1 for adults for each trip, or $8 for children and-- $12 for adults for the 20 trip season. Trooper Pehrson said the driver, Benny Hyde, 31, was headed east when the drive line on the truck broke and struck the vehicle's air tank, putting the brakes out of com- mission. The officer said Hyde rode the truck downhill for about a mile before deciding to jump from the vehicle, which was travelling an estimated 70 miles an hour by that time. Hyde suffered a compound leg fracture, a head injury and numerous bruises. He was taken to the Blanding Clinic and then transferred to a Cortez hospital. A member of the Navajo police department, David Aneth, was injured Sunday evening when the vehicle he was driving overturned near the state line in the Four Corners area. Fil-fre- d, Utah-Colora- do Summer band at Blanding Summer band in Blanding will start with registration this Friday, June 17, between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the San Juan High School band room. Classes in band, small group instruction and private instruction will be given. Students in fifth grade through high school are encouraged to participate. There will be no fees and the classes will last six weeks. Classes will begin Monday, June 20. The San Juan High School band will be participating In the Days of 47 parade July 24 in Salt Lake City.
