While still in youth it was diagnosed that he had diabetes, yet he never let his physical troubles interfere with his happy outlook on life and his school participation. He was active in the FFA at Fruita Union High School in Colorado, where he was elected student body president. He was a studious young man and loved his teachers. he was called to serve a L.D.S. mission in northern California, where he worked closely with President J. Leonard Love and became well acquainted with many of the General Authorities through his work in the mission home. He was released in August 1959. Because of the serious nature of his physical problems he was told he should never marry and that he would not live past 28. He followed instead the counsel of his bishop, Scott Hurst, and in 1961 married a young school teacher who had come to Blanding, Nellene Parry. They were married in the St. George temple, September 22 of that " year. Their marriage and the untiring devotion of his helpmate, NeUene have been an In 1957 . inspiration to all.
