Here Paul Mantz, sixth grade teacher, shows pistol and rifle, used by mountain men, to students, aides and teacher, Miss Mahon. Mr. Mantz is presently serving as State Brigade leader in the American Mountain Men Association, a national organization. Mantz explained to the classes about various Bicentennial activities going on this year, as well as about research projects and clothing worn in the 18th century. The buckskins he is wearing are all hand-ma- de from scratch. Photo and caption by Janet Wilcox. ' Sadie Fewkes, one class member, explained the helpful attitude her Navajo classmates have shown. Theyve been a real help to me, and are a really talented people. Visiting the rug weaving class, it was even easier to note the friendly camaraderie between the Navajo instructor, Rose Keith, and the white women seated on the floor busily weaving their rugs. Though putting the yarn on the frame (which each class member had to build) was . really nerve-wracki- at ng said Lydia Palmer, Rose was very patient and helpful. Class members learned how to use the spindle to make the first, yarn stronger. Mrs. Kasper from the Hatch area drove over 40 miles to attend and even used her own spinning wheel to make her yarn. It took both Navajo and white classmates or three class alike two to get the frames periods just to weave. ready Next, they learned to use the heddle dowel, which changes the warp to weave, how to keep the tension just right (another difficult part), and how to rely on a tape measure to keep the sides even and the pattern where they wanted it. Most of the women had a -- design in mind when they began, either sketched out or in their minds. However, Mrs. Keith says she just designs as she goes. How long it takes depends on how complicated the design is. The small rugs the class is making will take several hundred hours. Though she has been weaving rugs since she was 16 and has taught individuals how to weave in her home, this is the first time Mrs. Keith has taught a class. She said some Indian women will not share their talent with others, and Some are angry with her for teaching rug weaving. Participants in this class come from Eastland, 40 miles to the northeast, as well as from comparable distances south on the reservation.
