Show 1 The San Juan Record Many Cancer Deaths Needless Too many women are kil- ling themselves each year: breast cancer deaths that can be blamed on negligence and fear, the National Crusade Chairman of the American Cancer Society told nearly 300 volunteers who attended the Education and Crusade Conference of the Utah Division in Salt Lake City last week. Mrs. Marvella Bayh, wife of U.S. Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana, who underwent a mastectomy operation in 1971, said that breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths among women in the United women with breast malignancy dead within five years after the disease is discovered. k The tragedy of this is that we could be saving 12 out of every 15 cancer patients instead of losing half", she said. The reason for the difference is that 95 percent of all breast cancer is discovered by women themselves, after the disease is often spread beyond its primary source and is difficult to treat. Dr. W.. Knox Fitzpatrick, Jr., President of the Utah Division, emphasized the success of the breast and uterine can- cer detection clinics which have examined more than 10,000 women in Utah and which have resulted in more women in the state becoming aware of monthly breast In one recent clinic, 21 women out of 250 he said, examined were found to have some suspicious symptom and self-examinati- on. were referred to their person- al physicians for further examination and treatment. Dr. Fitzpatrick stated further that the National Society has set a goal for a Pap test for every women by 1976. Rampton Backs Local Progress Plan Urging Utahns to work to- gether to make our state and communities a better place to live, Utah Governor Calvin Rampton has announced the formation of a new program to coordinate and encourage that Utah Community process. Progress is the new plan that will help local community leaders plan a logical pattern for growth and development, and for those towns that need it, a shot in the arm. In Utah, as in every other state, people are leaving our small towns to move to the cities," Governor Rampton said. This migration leaves parts of rural Utah with a dwindling economy and a bleak future. At the same time, the cities cannot easily handle the booming growth. To help solve these pro- weve created Utah Community Progress. After retiring from the county roads he took care of our local cemetery and did a marvelous job. Many people have paid a tribute to him on this undertaking. Guy worked long hours at this job and loved each bush and shrub there, and it was a pleasure to go there and see his handiwork. Last year Guy and his wife, Ruth, and her brothers Bert, Lewis, Melvin and their wives got together and went to Old Mexico, where they visited He was always their birth places.. Our sentiments to our be- loved friend Guy are the same as expressed by George and Lona Hurst in their poem, written by them, which is as follows: He was a gentle, kindly man who seldom thought of self: But always had a pleasant smile for everyone he met. Beauty came to things he touched, we never will forget. He loved the work of the master artist, the trees, flowers, rocks, streams and land. He made our cemetery a heaven on earth" , with the touch of his gentle hand.
