Show Q - Jose, From Portugal, Spends Week In County By JANET WILCOX What do Fork, Spanish Portugual and San Juan County The all have in common? " answer is Jose Pereira, an exchange student from Lisbon, Protugual who is going to school in the United States this year. He has been attending Spanish Fork High but last week through arrangement made by State Senator Bowan,r who is Joses neighbor in Span ish Fork, and State Representative Calvin Black, he was able to visit San Juan County and get a first hand glimpse of Navajo life on the reservation. Jose spent one day at the home of Chuck Harrison in B landing, another, with Tom Holliday family in Monument Valley. The next day he rode the bus route from Mexican Hat and stayed the remainder of the week with Cleal Bradford. He was able to spend four days attending school at San Juan High where he had the opportunity several times to explain about his country and the exchange program which is sponsored by the American Field Service. Jose also visited the 7th grade class at the Seventh Day Adventist School in Monument Valley and spoke to the students there also. When asked if he noticed anything different about the San Juan schools he replied, Yes, how. they act is better, maybe its because of being a I really small community. liked the Indian students, they were real friendly. Explaining about the exchange program, Jose said there are 12 exchange students from foreign countries in Utah and there are approximately 2.000 in the United States. These exchange students from Utah recently had the opporof visiting the state tunity legislature where Jose was selected as spokesman for the group in speaking to the legis- lators. Jose explained some of the differences between the school systems stating that in Lisbon all students are required to study three years of English and 5 years of French. They are graded on a scale of with a score of 12 being average. There are 30 high schools in Lisbon and the one Jose attends has about 3,000 students. They attend school on a half-da- y basis going 5 hours a day. He also mentioned that, the people here are more conservative, that in their schools there arent as many rules 0-- 20 4-- but at the same time there is no dating like there is here. Boys and girls go more in groups to activities and there arent as many cliques. Lisbon is only 20 miles from the coast so Jose has had ample opportunity to develop his scuba diving skills and stated that he will be giving a course in scuba diving to students at Spanish Fork this spring. Jose is 18 years old and has two younger brothers at home. He will leave the United States for his home in July and stated that he feels this experience has really been great.
