Many of the local people participated in the film are direct decendants of that famed group that first first braved the trip from Escalante to Southern, Utah in 1880, Pediaps that is one reason this 1970 "rerun" seems so real. These decen dants have been told the story of that unique journey made by their fathers and grandfathers since childhood and it has become a part of their lives. The task of taking horses, wagons and pioneers over the road that was hastily built nearly 100 years ago was accomplished remarkably well and without incident. There was one short stretch of the trail where a winch was used to help the wagons for fear they would be damaged, but a driver and horse took it to the top. Seven teams of horses to a wagon, a beautiful sight! The final scenes filmed at the big cottonwood tree up Cottonwood Wash were equally realistic. This was the sight of the pioneers final stop after a perilous six month jpumey journey from Escalante, too weary to travel on to Montezuma Creek. As the last of the wagons arrive and are met by the members of the group who are already camped, it is indeed a heartwarming scene. One is jn oIa trt fppl that the end of one life and the beginning of a new one is at hand for these sturdy pioneers. The filming of the second half of the paper is now complete.
