Show Maughan heads county group Calling on all citizens of San Juan County to observe "Healthy Baby Week" by learning more about prevention of birth defects, Dr. Kenneth C. Maughan observed that good health practices start long before baby is born. Dr. Maughan is chairman of the San Juan County March of Dimes organization, a group whose mission is to prevent crippling defects among new babies. "Healthy Baby Week" will be observed nationally 7. May "Prospective parents should know that premature birth can bring additional health risk to the baby, and good medical care for the mother before the baby is born gives better assurance of a full-ter- m pregnancy, " said Dr. Maughan. He added that parents -- to -- be should know their blood types to guard against the possibility of having an "Rh baby. " A vaccine has been developed that can prevent Rh sensitivity in mothers not already sensitized a problem that can make their newborn babies dangerously ill. Dr. Maughan also mentioned rubella, a disease often called "German Measles" or three -day measles, which can cause blindness, deafness or other defects when the mother-to-b- e contracts the disease early in her pregnancy. Dr. Maughan said a rubella 11-1- vaccine should become available for use among the general public soon. He reminded that rubella must not be confused with "red measles," a two-we- desease for which most Utah children are already immunized. He stressed that the more youngsters who are immunized, the better are chances ic of preventing a rubella scores could leave that of Utah babies crippled from birth. "We're learning a lot about how to prevent these problems in children, and anyone with questions can get free literature from the March of Dimes, " said Dr. Maughan. edi-dem- The San Juan Record Montlcello, Utah Thursday, May 8, 1969 Page Fourteen Stake hosts girls camp The San Juan Stake YWMIA hostessed a regional girls camp Friday and Saturday at the Windwhistle Campgrounds.
