He stated that statistics gathered by the University of Utah prove that there have been more tourists travelling through the region. They spend more time and money and are more affluent each year. Visits to National Parks and Monuments are up 16 this year and business is up 9 this year. The statistics show that each dollar spent by tourists brings in a total of 35J: in taxes and multiplies itself three times before leaving the State. The dollar is passed from tourist to merchant to employee. Our region captured four percent of the total tourist business in the State in 1968. San Juan County, with only one percent of the population received two percent of the tourist business in the State, amounting to about $4, 000, 000. Mr. Rose stated that we, as a region, need to become more aware of the tourists, invite them to stay, and provide more and better services for them, in order to compete for their business. |
