J3: David Kimbrough Jr., Todd Blickenstaff The San Juan Record Monticello, Utah Thursday, November 16, 1967 Page Three Rep. Laurence J. Burton today introduced a resolution aimed at keeping the federal highway construction program on schedule. The resolution calls on the President to forgo any curtailment of Highway Trust Fund expenditures. The move by Rep. Burton follows a recent suggestion by Transportation Secretary Alan S. Boyd that federal highway programs be cut back in view of the projected budget deficit for fiscal 1968. "Placing a freeze on way trust fund expenditures at this time would have little effect on current inflationary trends," the Utah Republican said, "but would deny the Nation urgently needed highways. " "While I am deeply concerned about the current level of deficit spending, any curtailment should be limited to those programs where we can lawfully exercise options. " Rep. Burton noted that the 1956 Highway Revenue Act requires that special tax revenues be earmarked specifically for this program. "Therefore, placing a freeze on highway construction would not free these funds for use in other programs. " "Postponement of this vital program would also be breaking faith with the highway construction industry and State highway departments. The 1956 Act called for completion of the highway program within a specified number of years. Consequently, state agency and industry operations were geared up to meet this deadline, " the Congressman continued. "This often required drastic increases in cash and credit outlays for personnel and capital equipment. It would be unrealistic and costly to idle these resources, especially at a time when we are already experiencing a construction slump. " "There are many places where cuts in the federal budget can be made but the interstate highway program certainly is net one of them, " Mr. Burton concluded. h) The Light V. rOTCTOTa a g a a aa ga a too oo ft Touch i by Paulyo Bowerman FREE t Webelos Den in Pack t Theparticipated in a seed t DrJSTTAILILA'irCQrJ t day Valley gathering in afternoon under the Three Sixth Grade girls .it the Blanding Elementary School have recently completed their dresses for the sewing unit of their home economics class.
