Biography of Record For the Father interesting reading Mr. Paul Mantz, Jr. , a teacher in the Blanding elementary schools, is the proud owner of one of the first issues of the book "Hollywood Pilot, the Biography of Paul Mantz. " The book, which was written by Don Dwlggins, it a biography of his father, Paul Mantz, Sr. , and tells of the long and exciting career of Mr. Mantz, Sr., as a stunt pilot in the movies. Mr. Mantz started his career early in 1919 with his first lesson on a JN4D using the money he had earned at a driver of a hearse. It is estimated that Mr. Mantz, during his Hollywood career, earned and spent a cool $10 million dollars. His stunt flying is revealed in such films as West Point of the Air, Men With Wings, Test Pilot, Spirit of St. Louis, Air Mail, Twelve Oclock under High and he flew a the Brooklyn Bridge for a scene in Blaze of Noon. Paul Mantz was a moody man and is portrayed as such by the author. He himself said he was not a stunt pilot, but a precision pilot. He served as a technical adviser to Amelia Earhart as she prepared for her last flight and it was his opinion that she ran out of gas over the Pacific and crashed into the sea. In the filming of the "Flight of the Phoenix" in Buttercup Valley near Yuma, Ariz. , on the morning of July 8, 1965, Mr. Mantz was flying a ship rigged from remnants to resemble a crashed as a stand-i- n for his friend and fellow pilot, Jimmy Stewart, and a skid dug into the dirt, causing the plane to cartwheel.
