Show Bennett asks investigation of Powell water seepage Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, today asked the Bureau of Reclamation to conduct an investigation and keep him advised about reports that more than three (m) million acre-feof water have been apparently lost because of seepage and bank storage along the banks and bottom of Lake Powell behind Cten Canyon Dam. "We are about to begin hearings on the Lower Colorado River Project and one of the major stumbling blocks to its approval has been the lack of water available to lower basin et states," Sen. Bennett said in a letter to Interior Secretary Stewart L. Udall. "Although three (m) million acre feet will not solve all oi the problems, it will certainly go a long way toward allesuting some of the shortages. " The Senator asked the Interior Department how much seepage it anticipated when it started Clen Canyon Dam and how much over this estimate the three (m) million acre feet represented. "How much of this water is recoverable when and if the reservoir is drawn to lower levels," Sen. Bennett asked. "Does the Interior Department exject this seepage to continue and how much ot it is permanently lost to the Colorado River system?" Sen. Bennett aUo asked the Interior Department when "we can expect" the final filling of Lake Pow ell w hich w ill be a 27 (m) million acre fool reservoir. "One of the factors that espec ially disturber me," he said, "is that the water seepage is charged against the Upper Basin. However, it would be interesting to know if any seep- - irimifuEi frcdfi I fell tiSrecI age or bank xioug.- - i Occuirmy below the Lee's lery checkpoint. "It also represents 325, '00 gallons of water which ceil! supply a family ot lice for one year," he said. "Simple arithmetic she'wsthe significance of the seepage." ' DiD YoUfxfoW?
