Therefore, total costs of chemical applications must be carefully weighed against the possible increase in range forage. Of all chemicals used in recent tests in Nevada, Oregon, and Utah, 2,4-butyl ester has given best results. However, a single appl cation of two pounds per acre seldom gives over a 50 per certi. kill of rabbitbrush. Such chemicals as 2,4,5-T- , Silvex, MCPA. A good , indication index of the proper time to spray rabbitbrush is when crested or bluebunch vheatgrass is heading. Sagebrush areas containing large amounts of rabbitbrush shoud be sprayed toward the end of the effective killing period for big sage in order to also kill as much of the rabbitbrush as possible. ALFALFA WEEVIL In some areas of the county, alfalfa weevil have proven quite a problem in the past. Following such a mild winter as we have just experienced, we can look for possibly more damage this year. Weevil can be readily controlled. The best time for control is when the alfalfa is 14 to 2 inches high, according to Rell Argyle, county extension agent. He recommends that alfalfa be sprayed at this time using four ounces of actual heptachlor or dieldrin per acre at the above stated stage of growth. These chemicals will kill the adult weevil before they lay their eggs. The cost of spray is low and returns generally high. ROOT MAGGOTS "What is meant by treating soil for root maggots and other soil pests? This question has been asked many times of the county agriculture "agent. He states that this refers to treating the soil with insectides to kill soil pests before seeding. Argyle recommends that where root insects are a problem or before planting strawberries, the soil should be treated by spraying or dusting at the rate of five pounds actual heptachlor, dieldrin or aldrin over each acre, then working it into the upper three inches of the soil before planting. |
