HEWS THE SAN DRIVER'S JUAN SEAT PAGE FIVE RECORD FOR City Mere Buys Prize Beef at Stock Show SPORTSMEN Larry Tobler, nationally known the "Dynamo of the Banjo, will appear at Monticello high school on Friday, February 13, at 1:00 p.m. Mr. Tobler has had twenty years of professional experience as a soloist in all forms of work connected with the instrument and will take his audience on a musical time trip through American history. Included in the performance will be music from Stephen Foster, the showboat and minstrel era, county and rural music with coyboy songs and through the gay '90s to vaudeville with its jazz and finally to the present with popular and classic numbers of today. as Church members and friends presented Reverend and Mrs. Wilson with two pieces of luggage as a token of their respect and friendship for the couple leaving. They left Tuesday for Los Angeles, California where they will be for some time though not permanent location. Guest Speaker at Church On February 8, Reverend Richard Campbell of Ogden will be the guest speaker at the Community church, and possibly the new pastor. Returns to Home Mrs. Pearl Black returned home Saturday from a visit with her daughters Mrs. W. R. For Monticello steers were bought recently and the 1959 auctions of beef shown in the 1959 National Western Stock show by City Mercantile of Monticello. The beef which will be offered to customers this week won second and third place ribbons and carcass weight was 833 and 760 pounds, and are Hereford and Angus breeds specially raised cattle. The Western Stock Show, publicized recently in Life Magazine, is second in size only to the Stock show held in Chicago, attracting the finest animals in the country. Two Famous Banjo Player At fAHS February 13 48 Make Grades prize-winnin- g High Honor Roll Monticello High School has released its Honor Roll for the second term. In order to qualify on the honor roll, a student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better. An A is valued at 4 points, a B at three, a C as 2 and a D as one. ' Ailing Mrs. Helen Wilson was on the sick list the first part of the week. Hospital Patient Michael Somerville has been a hospital patient for several days. Illness brings Wife, Daughter Randolph Benally was seriously ill in the hospital last week. Mrs. Lila Palmer brought his wife and daughter up from Blanding to visit with him on Thursday. Stork Strike The stork seems to be on a strike last month with only eight babies being born at the San Juan hospital in January. The latest report was a boy, Thomas Ray, for Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lynn Pipkin on January 26. Ladies Serve Dinner. ' The Community Church ladies and those from the Church Workers served dinner Thursday evening at the Community Church Social Hall for members of the Chamber of Commerce and their wives. Musical program was enjoyed with the excellent meal. Home from Hospital Lyle Hyde, who has been a patient in the Veterans Hospital in Grand Junction is home for a few days. Completes Training Ted Edwards, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Edwards, who is a student at the BYU has completed five weeks of student teaching at Evergreen Junior High School in Salt Lake City. Ted is majoring in education and minoring in business. Town Caller Saturday Mrs. Melita Walker, Ogden Center, was in town Saturday. Weekend at Home Karen Christensen spent the weekend with home folks. She is training at present in the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Monticello Sportsmen Elect Directors, Howard Rogers Named President for '59 Officer and directors of the Monticello Sportsmens Club, now 100 strong, were named this week for the coming year. Elections were held January 20 and January 27. Howard Rogers will lead the club as president with Art Adair, vice president, and Gayle Holt secretary. Other directors of the organization are Steve Mayne, Alex Jameson and Reed Wilson. At the next coming meeting on Thursday, February 19, in the commissioners room at the County Building, the Sportsmen hope to have a fish and game film and will discuss projects coming up. The club has submitted a proposal to the Fish and Game Department to raise the dam on Beaver Lake, increasing the size of the lake to over twice its present capacit- Miss School Carol Christensen is out of school with measles. Her brother, Rex, is keeping her company at home with a sore throat. Wins Award In a recent assembly held at LDS Business College, Miss Sheree Lyman, daughter of Mrs. Maxine Lyman of Monticello, received an award for achieving 100 percent in a time addition test in calculating. Birthday Party Lee Ann Sober was the recipient of some lovely gifts Friday evening when several friends called at her home to help celebrate hr 13th birthday. Parent Teachers Parent Teachers Association of Monticello met Thursday night in the Elementary school. A talk was given by William Walton, Chairman of the County Commissioners describing the bond proposal of finance a new library and the recreatiort for the county. MHS Improi ements Among the improvements that continue to mushroom at Monticello high school are the new giant-siz- e bulletin boards placed at strategic points in the halls. Besides keeping the student-bod- y it saves wear and tear on the walls from mountaing placecards and posters.
