That had another says . . . d d o fig-ge- one-doll- hog-was- (continued on page eight) h per Number 19 copy Record Rainfall NEAR MOAB V editor and I the other day. Hes all the time telling me what to write. I dont like that. I write what I wanna write. If its cold cuts in Siberia or hot tamales in Guadalajara that strike my fancy, thats what Im gonna write about and nobodys gonna change my mind. Right now hes got the Monti-cellbond election on his mind and says I should write a piece about it. I asked him how come. Everybody in town knows about it, so what cam I do, He says sure, everybody xnows hes going to vote for an ordinance to get a lot of money for a new water system, a new sewerage system and a lot more electric power. He r also says that a lot of people that maybe theres a tax nigger in the woodpile. Now right there is where I get feelin a little bit sorry for the editor because hes got trouble worryin about whether the bond issue will carry. Im trouble enough so Ill help him out, I said. Before he starts to cry about it I make up my mind that maybe I should put a few Doubtin Thomases straight on this election business. That pamphlet our city fathers put out explainin the whole setup looks a mite complicated when a guy takes a first peek at it. A second peek doesnt help much either, but a little concentrated readin and thought brings it all out. It looks more complicated than it is but it had to be that way because every detail of the whole thing had to be set down. When a town or a city, or even one human bein stretches out his hand and asks Uncle Sam for some help Old Uncle wants to know all about it. Whats the money for? How you gonna pay it back? And a lot more questions before you ever get one of bills. Ivy Baker Priests And that brings me back again to the point of payin it back. As I mentioned, this tax bug has bitten some people until they arent quite sure whether to vote for the ordinance or sit back and let somebody else do their worryin for em. This ordinance, as carefully drawn up by our city fathers, states plainly that Uncle Sam and everybody else will get his money back through the ordinary revenues from the very things the bond issue will buy. You pay your water bill and the money goes toward paying off the bonds. The same thing goes for your electric and sewerage bills. That ordinance takes care of every detail, as I said, but from front to back, it says nothin about people havin to pay higher taxes. If you dont believe it read it again. This rumor about gettin stuck for more taxes is all and its got our city manin the ager, Byron Oberg, all up air. I talked with him about this rumor and how a lot of people I can got funny ideas and he says take his word for it, even if I dont believe the ordinance, that there will be no taxes levied.which The whole period in the bonds will be redeemed will stretch over 30 years, he said, and every penny of it will be paid ONLY through the regular revenues derived from the water, electric and sewerage systems. Course I dont believe in trying to push anyone into anything if he doesnt wanna do something to help himself, but when somethin as important as this bond election comes along, I can t believe anyone in his right mind would vote against it. I can tell if the you one thing, though: leavin Im carry Issue doesnt town and I wont be alone! If you were out in the middle of a lake and goin down for the third time, wouldnt you holler for help? Well, the way the water, electric and sewerage systems stack up now it wouldnt be long lame-braine- ioc COLORADO RIVER HITS HIGH POINT Grants Oil Firm MoNrr Sello Montlceilo, San Juan County, Utah, Thursday, June 13, 1957 pages vs Contracts for Exceeds Total Crude Pipe Line For All of 1956 Construction contracts have been let for more than half of the Four Corners crude oil pipe line, it was announced in Houston, Tex., by R. Responsible for going over last years total was the most recent rainfall, which deposited an official 1.35 inches of moisture within a period. Added to the almost unprecedented total of 9.23 up to and including May 23, figures for the year so far have reached 10.58 inches, compared with 10.35 inches for all of last year. May Wettest Month Storms which soaked thirsty range and farmlands during the month of May piled up 3 05 inches to make it the wettest month of the year. The preceding month of April brought 2.65 inches, which had been the heaviest since the 2.17 January fall, most of which was snow. An end to the drought of the past few years is a foregone conclusion among stockmen and farmers, whose prospects for their products seem brighter this year than in any during the past 20 years. Culinary water supplies which have been seriously short the past decade have been amply restored to the point where no concern over them will be evident for some time to come. Grazing Good As to the beneficial effects of the storms so far this year, the U. S. Department of Agriculture said Thursday that grazing conditions in the 17 western states are the best since 1949. We have some mighty good ball players on our roster, he said. Theyre all willing to give everything they have to give Monticello a pennant winner. All they ask in return is a little support from the local fans. About Mailing Wedding Shower Cards Sets Deadline 4 first-class- one-thir- d T . The postmaster isnt one to discourage matrimony, let it be understood, but for the good of the future household and its trimmings he has this to say: Since the success of showers is related directly to the number of people who attend, it is imperative that invitations go expeditiously and accurately to their destination; hence, the importance of proper preparation.
