The festival was a climax to the MIAs annual work program. Folk dancing, polkas, swing, tango, waltzes and rock and roll comprised the program, in which 10 sections of three dances were organized. Each section was introduced with narration by Edith Lyman and depicted by nine lovely dancers from Monticello who performed between numbers by the larger groups. The festival was held in lieu of the statewide event staged annually in the University of Utah stadium. Division meets are held to allow greater sectional participation. The program included special interpretative dances by Evelyn Perry, Suzana Adams, Arline LaFawn Jones. Lie Momi Mar-kose- Maryetta Barton, Gwen Jimeson, Glenice Lewis and Gail Larrabee. Dance directors were Buckley Chnstensen and Betty McDonald, San Juan stake and Harry I vie and Alma Ivie, Young stake. The script for San Juan stake was written by Edith K. Members were reminded that reservations for the June 18 meeting must be made not later than 5 p.m. June 17 by calling 2491 favorite RETURNING to a an absence of after several years can quite often be a disillusioning experience. The deep hole where you always managed to catch a "big one" is no more. It has been filled in with mud or sand and the waters are slowly beginning to cut a new channel. Familiar landmarks about the stream, rocks, fallen trees and brush piles, are no more. And what's more, even the fish seem to have disappeared. What happened to your favorite stream? There are a number of possibilities, but the most likely answer is pollution. Manufacturing waste carelessly dumped into rivers and streams takes a high toll of fish population in many sections of our country. In addi--1 tion, careless land management1 practices allow tons of valuable top soil to be washed into streams by erosion. Fish need clean, clear water if they are to survive and prosper. They are able to reproduce more successfully and grow much faster in clear water. When mud or slit invades the stream not only does it affect the reproduction rate but as well it cuts down the available food supply. Clean water contains thousands of microscopic organism upon which the small fish feed but like the fish, these organisms have difficulty growing or reproducing in muddy waters. Legislation, education and a desire on the part of industry to cooperate as much as possible has made chemical pollution of streams the exception rather than the rule. But, this type of accidental stream poisoning will bring howls of protest from fishermen who will idly stand by and watch an equally deadly type of pollution ruin their form land erosion stream and kill off the fFn just cs thoroughly and rne.nodic;. iy. j 'I REMEMBER" IN JUSTICE COURT BY THE 0L8 TIMERS Eugene Dye, California, assault and battery, fined $30 and sentenced to 60 days in Jail, sentence suspended upon payment of fine. From A. D. Moses, Nyssa, Oregon: How well I remember the mode of living and incidents that happened over 50 years ago within the city of Spokane, Washington. In the springtime we gathered wild flowers, sand roses, yellow bells and buttercups from the sparsely settled townsite. . The old lamplighter lit the arc lights on the street corners in the evening and the kids played their games under these old lights. Spokane had not converted to the electric lights, so the homes were using gas and coal oil for lights and some even used candles. In 1903, I well remember, Indians on horseback peddled huckleberries (which they had gathered from the- - local hills) house to house. In 1904 a cougar followed a woman home (she had been visiting a neighbor two blocks away). Her husband cornered the animal in their chicken yard and killed him with one shot Some of our neighbors kept a horse and buggy, for then the automobile bad not arrived. But they were laying street car tracks and part of the city soon had street car service. , The street car age has passed, so has the ox drawn wagon. One of my earliest recollections is the sight of an ox drawn wagon hauling wheat to market, the driver walking alongside with a long bull whip which he would crack over their heads. , (gend entrlbtlons to this colnmn to Tho Old Timer, Commontty Press Serv lee.
