Licensed Engineers fo Colorado, Utah and By Walter Chamblin, Jr. The farm group in Congress, which advocates rigid price supports at 90 per cent of parity for basic agricultural commodities, has picked up support from a new source . . . organized labor, especially the CIO. This is a political development which bears watching. In the last Congress President Eisenhower vigorously supported his Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Benson, in successfully opposing the cont.nuation of 90 per cent of parity. The Administration took the position that the 90 per cent rigid price supports build up large surpluses. Since there is no market for these sui pluses, the government must borrow money! to pay the farmer for that which he cannot sell The borrowing of this money increases the national debt . . . which sparks an inflationary spiral . . . which in turn increases the cost of food to the consumer. To prevent this . . . the favored and succeeded in passing a new farm law providing for flexible price supports down to 82V2 per cent. This new law does not become effective until the current crops, that is, the 1955 crops, are harvested Consequently, its effect Is yet to be tested and farm price conditions today are therefore in no way attributable to the program. and morning came without undue delay. A year ago more than 40 New Dealers who usually supported legislation favored by big union bosses voted against 90 per cent of parity on the basis that it would increase consume prices but under the pending deal union leadership figure a $1.25 minimum wage would more than compensate for the increase that a 90 per cent of farm price parity would give to consumer prices. NOTE: Who pays for such a deal? The fact is, Utahs controversial governor said exactly the same privately and publicly here at things back east as he has long said home. The only difference is, there was more hubub raised nationally when the statements were made nationally. One Utahn who is not ready to count Gov. Lee out as ready for the political graveyard is Sen. Wallace F. Bennett. The whispers keep growing that Gov. Lee is aiming for a showdown w ith Sen. Bennett in the 1936 primary election. Phe constitutional barrier which says governors should not run for the Senate during the term to which they are elected will not be an insurmountable one. Wyomings Supreme Court and also the U. S. Supreme Court has ruled that no state constitution can bar a man from becoming a Senator if he is qualified under the federal constitution. With Lees term as governor ending just a few months past election there would be even more reason for the court to hold with the and other states. precedents already set in Wyoming The one man who knows, if anyone does, what Gov. A bill has been reported by the House Agriculture Committee. Its sponsors are optimistic of passage and the story at the Capitol is that a deal is in the making between the 90 per cent of paity group and big union bosses. The pending deal is to be this . . . labor members of Congress will support the 90 per cent of parity group . . . and the 90 per cent of parity group in turn will support the labor members of Congress in seeking an increase in the minimum wage to S1.25 per hour. (Mr. Eisenhower has recommended an increase from 75 cents to 90 cents.) It has been expected that 90 per cent of parity bill would be brought to a vote in the house late this week or the first of next week. Now, however, the 90 per cent of parity group favors postponing the vote until This indicates that the 90 per cent group is not sure of the votes but, regardless of that, the political importance of the pendmg deal is in no way dimin- 1953 Page 2 uscw Mnd intrwfucmf RAT CROWLEY They Get Through When Others Fail Wednesday and Thursday April 6 and 7 d GimemaScopS los-ola- E E Congratulations To L.
