By PATRICIA HOEY. DUBLIN (Universal) Ireland still Christmas ways keeps to the and customs as probably does no other country in the world. From the president who teaches his children to kneel round the cnristmas candle to Uffht Mary and the Infant Jesus on their way, and to made swept clean, a good turf-fir- e up, a chair drawn close to the hearth, and the door left on the latch in the hope and belief that the Divine Visitors may come in to rest on their long Journey. Lullaby Claimed To Be That of Mary. me women 01 the west have a kind of chant called old-tirr- k; ittiS to me poorest cottager districts, all love the Christmas. And the government encourages it, for their great idea is to keep Ireland Gaelic and to preserve all things Gaelic. Ireland, both in ancient days and now, primarily regarded Christmas as a religious festival anielebrated it with the greatest possible pomp and ceremony. Many of the old customs and beliefs are curiously touching and beautiful, especially in the Gaeltacht, where they are still pre- - vnruimu, the Gaelic-speakinold-tim- " ""W"1 in g c .i A. say is the lullaby sung by our Lady to Her Son on the first Christmas night in the world. It is sung in a strangly beautiful air that has never been taken down nor set to music. It is handed down from mother to daughter for generations and the legend is that the Gaels heard our Lady singing it one Christmas night when she came back to earth with Her Baby. The meaning of the candle, also lit in Irish homes and placed in the window for twelve nights at Christmas, is connected with the same beautiful idea and is to light Mary on her way lest in the dark she should stumble and fall or maybe lose her way in the loneliness of the e It is still believed there that the Infant Jesus with His Mother returns to Ireland on that night (Christmas eve) and wanders through the earth. Case Against Accused Taxicab Driver Heard After hearing arguments of attorneys from 10:30 Friday morning to 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Judge John W. H. Morgan took the case of Butcher, charged with driving a taxi while drunk, under advisement and likely will rule on it in Saturday's session. Butcher was arraigned on violating section 34 after crashing into a car owned by Mrs. F. M. Perkins, 272 Fourth avenue, and driven by her son, Jesse R. Perkins, Thanksgiving day. I In some places a light Is placed in the stable also and always it was the custom to give a special Christmas dinner and warm bed to the animals because they were God's chosen companions. There is a belief prevalent In many people, and in races as far apart as the Irish and the Indians, that animals can speak on Christmas night and that when the Christmas bells ring out at midnight, the animals kneel in their stalls to pray. This may be in connection with the great Catholic Saint Anthony, who said that "the very beasts confess the Christ." Fatted Bullock Killed To Furnish Feast. Apart from the religious the Irish had and have still to some extent a of very romantic lay celebration Christmas. A week or so before Christmas it was the custom for land proprietors to kill a fat bullock for distribution among the poor. Farmers who possessed from ten acres upward used to kill a specially fattened pig and distribute it to their poorer neighbors. There was one old custom which made a very nice feast, for farmer folk, namely, when the hayricks were made up and the apples became ripe a number of the latter were put into the ricks of the new mown hay. This it was contended gave them a very delicious flavor by Christmas. Salmon also used to be specially prepared for Christmas. Old records say it was pickled in vinegar and whole ginger and kept for a breakfast dish on Christmas day. Large trout was treated in the same way. Eggs intended for Christmas use were always preserved in corn chaff, rubbed over with having been first o butter. In districts young men fantastically dressed with fifes and drums used to promenade and salute householders. They were rewarded with gifts Of eggs, butter and bacon, which th?y sold for money. In the evening they held a celebration they called a batter and this, according to the learned Dr. Todd, was neither more nor less than a drinking bout. Whisky, Beer, Food Used for Presents. They were called mummers, but the only modern representation they have are called waits who in Christmas week sing for charities throughout Ireland. Presents in the old days in Ireland differed in many wp.ys from our modern eustoms. The people used to give each other whisky and beer, fine flour, geese, turkeys and hares. And they were specially fond of a delightful beverage called mead. Mead was extracted from the honeycomb after the honey had been pressed therefrom and mixed with alcoholic spirit. A quaint old Irish writer describes this beverage as very deliphtful but "deceitful and seductive." The yule log has always been a familiar custom in Ireland as well as In England and as late as 1865 was used in Lord Ward's mansion near Downpatrick. All persons entering the house while the yule log was burning must drink with the host before leaving or there would be bad luck. Another quaint old Irish custom was to the effect that the first person who heard the cock crow on Christmas morning, if a man. was rewarded with a cup of tea mixed with a glass of whisky: if a woman, she was given six kisses. Crowds used to sit up together waiting for the cock to crow. In County Cork a huge tallow candle with three ends was lit on Christmas eve in commemoration of the At midnight it was Holy Trinity. extinguished and preserved during the year as a protection against evil spirits. December 28 Held Day of Bad Lack-- It is recorded that at on; period in Ireland schoolmasters of Kerry received as their sole yearly pay a pound of butter on Chrlitmas eve. December 28 in ancient Ireland was known as Blood Thursday Housewives would not warp bread nor permit ;t to be warped and anything begun on that day wag unlucky and bound to have an unlucky ending. On the last night of the year there was yet another old custom. The head of each family used to throw a cake against the back door. The idea was to keep out hunger for the following year. In County Down it was considered lucky at Christinas time to throw straw into bouses, and bits of money were thrown back in return. In County Antrim it was consid-- I ered very unlucky if on New Year's day any person even a messenger entered and left the house without eating and drinking while within. There was another very pictur- -, in esque custom which consisted making as high as possible a sieve of oats. This was surrounded by twelve candles, and in the center one very large one In memory of our Lord and His twelve disciples. The pity Is that except in the Gaelic speaking districts the old customs are rapidly dying out. The purely religious ruptoms. however, m Ireland it any rate are still being night.
