Utah BENEFACTOR OF HUMAN RACE ft Sir James Simpson Wat the First Physician to Use Chloroform in Surgical Cates. The recent death of Sir Alexander Simpson, the famous Ediuburgh doctor, brings to mind the wonderful discovery of his uucle, Sir James Simp-aohis predecessor us professor of midwifery in the chuir of Edinburgh university. Sir James, if not actually the discoverer of chloroform, was at any rate, the first to introduce Its employment as an anesthetic into surgical practice. This was In 1843. Previously all operations were pern, formed without anesthetics, the patient being drugged with whisky and held down by strong men while the operation was performed. No medical discovery ever did more to alleviate human suffering. Sir James is generally given credit for the actual discovery of chloroform, but it la stated in some works that it was discovered some years previous to bis first experiments by an American doctor named Guthrie and by a Trench physician named In any case it waa Doctor Simpson who proved Us great value as an anesthetic, and the room in which he made his first experiment etill exists In Edinburgh. The story goes that he tried the chloroform on himself and two medical friends. They proved its efficacy by simultaneously falling beneath the Sir James had considerable table. prejudices to overcome before chloroform was adopted generally by the medical profession, it being denounced t one time aa dangerous to health, morals and religion. It Is estimated by the New York state college of forestry that over 640 cords of beech, birch and maple wood ore used every day in the wood distillation Industry in New York state. The Industry has been greatly stimulated by the European war Inasmuch as acetate of lime, one of the principal products of the Industry, Is used In the manufacture of high explosives. The price of wood alcohol, another product of the Industry, baa also risen very largely as a result of the war. The bureau, alt bough little has been said about It, has been of much benefit to both the fishermen and general public during the pnst few years. When an opportunity for the development of a new fishery, based upon the tllefish, was recognized the bureau set out by advice and propaganda, ami actual teuiporury direction of the fishery In all its phases, to Initiate tbe fishery and make it a success. Tbe result of Its efforts is kuowu to some The fish was practically unknown to the market before 11115, but within nlue mouths after the first movement by the bureau 0,838,909 pounds of tllefish, vulued at $233,000, hud been marketed. An absolutely new fishery was established, with consequent benefit to fishermen, dealers and the public. The efforts la promoting the utilization of other waste fish are also meeting with murked success. The bureau has also tuken up the problems of such vital public Interest as a study of the habits aud propagation of fishes that destroy mosquito larvae, aud are uuture's protectors of public health. The problem of the decline of the shad, which bus confronted the bureuu for years, has been taken up by a more comprehensive and vigorous Investigation than has been attempted in the past. The halibut fishery of the northwestern states has been directly ulded by Investigation and surveys which were promptly productive of results. The Important tuna fishing and packing Interest of California have sought successfully the bureau's aid, and a careful and extended investigation of the habits of the tuna has been in progress for some months. Looking to the benefit of the salmon fisheries of the western states aud Alaska, a thorough study of the habits and propagation of the salnmu has been pursued, and alremly, u is said by officials, results are attained which will materially aid both the stutes aud the federal government In the propagation and conservation of the sulmmi. Requisites of the Day in Hats ERADICATION OF RED MITES All Night Pests Fill Their Bodies With Blood From Fowls and Then Hide in Daytime. The red mite is the worst enemy the poultrymau has to contend with, aud the very hardest one to fight. This pest Is very small and normally is grayish in color, but, more often, it presents a deep red color, because of the blood with which it is filled. Unless very numerous, the mites are seldom found on the hens. The pests work on the bens at night, filling their bodies with blood, and hide beneath the perches, and in cracks and crevices near the roosting quarters during the day. Whitewash i u not very effective in fighting the red mite. A better spraying material is coal oil emulsion. This is made by dissolving half a bar of laundry soap in hot water and adding half a gallon of coal oil. Tills mixture can be diluted with five gallons of water. The emulsion is best applied with a spray-pumfor the reason that the pump will put the fluid in cracks and crevices that could not be reached with a brush. The Job of spraying must be very thoroughly done. Some of the mites will likely escape the first spraying, and for this reason It is advisable to repeat the spraying in a few days, and again in a week, to destroy the mites that hatch from eggs. SMALL PILL, SMALL DOSE, SMALL PRICE, Genuine must bear Signature WHY SHE CAN OUTTALK YOU Scientist Comes Forward With Assertion That Women Need Less Lung Power Than Men. A woman can talk longer than a man because she uses less force in speaking than the man does. A German professor has proved by actual find very delicate measurements that the barytone singer uses far more energy than the tenor and that the bass singer uses more force than either. The range of voices differs greatly, so the percentage varies to the same extent, bu$ as a general result It was proved that the tenor uses only from of the to lung power of the barytone or bass. The difference between the force used by the contralto and the soprano Is also marked, and the contralto who sings In very deep tones uses at least ten times the force of the thrilling soprano. The explanation Is so simple that It Is surprising that the Investigation was not made long ago. It has long been known that the tenor or soprano brings the vocal cords close together and keeps tbe edges only vibrating by the emission of air. The bass or contralto leaves the space between the cords wider open and has t vibrate very much more of the membranes, so that a considerably larger amount of air Is required and much more force Is expended. Persons with high, squeaky voices often seem to be very loquacious, and the reason is now plain they can talk with far less effort than those who take a deeper tone and have to use more air to utter their words. Here lies the real explanation of the ease with which a woman can outtalk a man. She has the advantage of usto ing from less lung power and even though her lungs may be smaller the difference j Is never so great as that between the amount of air required. s h th h to Mothers d gnr-dv- STATEMENT th The sun plays havoc with curtains, draperies, pillow covers and household decorations and makes them look dingy long before the materials are much worn.
