MONOGRAM aee Market St. Hog-Growi- ng Contests Make Better Breeders (Frpnd by the United State Department of Agriculture.) g contests In which the object Is to make a fitter weigh a ton when six months old have demonstrated the soundness of the recommendations on breeding, feeding and management which have long been made by the various state department stations and the United States Department of Agriculture. In one of these contests conducted last year by the Indiana Live Stock Breeders association 555 farmers enrolled and 33 of them raised 36 litters which weighed 2,000 pounds or more at the end of 180 days. The Important facts for pig producers to remember, says E. Z. Russell, In charge of swine investigations for the United States Departmeut of Agriculture, Is that all of the winning litters were farrowed and suckled In clean quarters ; all were sired by purebred boars ; 28 of the dams were pures and 2 crossbred, 6 were breds ; none of the 36 litters contained fewer than 10 pigs; and all of them were farrowed by old sows. On the average, therefore, the pigs In these record litters weighed 200 pounds when they had reached the tender age of six months. Many states are holding similar contests this year, says the department, and It is expected that the results will make a large number of converts to the principles and practices of better breeding, feeding and care, not only for bogs, but for all kinds of farm aniHog-growln- For Qsality, Flavor and a the Sealed Paokage, GOLD TRANSFER - j Haw a packet in yoor pocket tor sw-reid- y refreshment. These flies are about the size of honeybees, and are most annoying to horses legs. Botflies deposit small yellow eggs, United Stetee Department (Prepared br the of Agrtcnltore.) The increase of the San Jose scale during the last two years in the Ozark region of Arkansas has seriously threatened the apple industry in several localities. Steps have been taken by entomologists of the United States Department of Agriculture to find an effective means of control for this pest Of all the Insecticides tried In various experiments at Bentonvllle, Ark., best results were obtained with paraffin-oi- l or lubrlcatlng-ol- l the emulsion. Department Circular 263, Preliminary Report on Control of San Jose Scale With Lubrlcating-Ol-l Emulsion, by A. J.' Ackerman, entomologist, discusses the history and seriousness of the Infestation, and describes the proper way to prepare and , apply oil emulsions. Carelessness Chief Cause. Unintentional carelessness in spray methods on the part of growers Is no doubt the chief cause of the present widespread Infestation. Unfavorable weather for spraying during the dormant period has also been a factor in fecale Increase. Lack of parasites and predacious enemips is another explanation of the rapid spread of the pest. Spray In Dormant Season. The department recommends thorough spraying In the dormant season, during favorable weather, with an emulsion containing 2 per cent of oil. Two dormant sprays should be made In badly infested orchards. No Indication of injury to trees from the use of the spray recommended has been observed In Arkansas. Soft water must be used in making the emulsion. Applications made during the growing season only result In a partial checking of the scale. They should be made during the cool part of the day or injury to fruit and foliage will result. Very thorough spraying work should always be done to Insure reaching all the tips parts of the trees, particularly ' of the branches. (Prepared b y th United State Department of Agriculture.) A hog which remains in good health from the day he train is usuloaded on a market-boun- d ally a satisfaction to the farmer, the, packer, and the consumer. But there are many diseases and parasites which beset him during the few months allotted for his economic performance. If this performance is to be a creditable one, says the United States Department of Agriculture, the hog grower must keep close watch over his herd and learn to know something of the symptoms which indicate the possible approach of dangerous disease. Hog cholera is the great enemy of the swine Industry, although it has been diminishing in importance as, a result of widespread use of serum. It has been reduced by about 60 per cent from the losses during the most disastrous years, Dut with greater care and better understanding of the plague it could be re duced to a much greater extent. With the gradually Increasing control of this disease, it is important that swine growers give attention to tht many other ailments which cause losses, some of which are frequently confused with cholera.' Among the diseases with symptoms confused with those of cholera are anthrax, epilepsy, gastroenteritis, necrpbaclllosis, pleurpneumonia, isy, poisoning, awine plague, tuberculosis, and worms. When there is any deviation from the normal in gait, appetite, or digestion, it is time for the owner to take measures to prevent possible losses. Minor ailments often can be successfully treated by the owner, but In case of doubt it is the part of wisdom to call for a veterinarian. Georgia Girl Wins Over Boys in Raising Swine . About 17 per cent of the matured dairy animals In this country find their way to the slaughter and packing plants, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. If this percentage Is applied to the number of matured dairy animals reported on farms by the last census, and the average live weights and dressing yields are used In calculating the beef pro0 duction, the result shows about beef carcass proof pounds duced from dafty cattle during the year 1920. This quantity represents more than 23 per cent of the total beef production of the United States for that year. Probably 80 per cent of all the calves slaughtered are of dairy breeding. - If this percentage Is applied to the total number of calves slaughtered In 1920 and the resulting figure multiplied by the average live weight and dressing yields, the amount of veal pro- duced by dairy calves Is about 560,647,000 pounds for the year 1920. The principal conditions which cause dairy cows to be discarded for milk production purposes are old age, disease, physical defects, low milk yield, and sterility. Many old dairy cows and others that are unprofitable as milk producers are fattened for a short period and then sold for beef. When properly fed such cows make rapid gains, although the tendency U to accumulate fat externally and In the body cavities rather than to produce a flesh. About 85 per cent of the cow carcasses are graded as common or lower, and the meat Is used largely In the preparation of sausage and canned meat. Bulls that are no longer desired in the herd for various reasons make up a part of the meat from dairy cattle. They are seldom suitable for dressed beef, a large proportion of the rounds being used for dried or smoked beef and the remaining portions of the carcasses for sausage. While the quality of beef produced from mature cows and bulls is of lower grade, that is not necessarily true with respect to the veal obtained from dairy calves. Probably 95 per cent of the male and 50 per cent of the female dairy calves are slaughtered as calves. Most of these animals, If properly handled and slaughtered while young, produce a high grade of veal. 1,502,-450,00- buck-whea- To Produce Profitably Hens Require Best Feed Comfort in Hot Weather Necessary for Dairy Cow Lois Duncan ana Her Pet Pig. ton, Ga., wen the grand prize In the Boys Pig club events of the recent Southeastern fair in Atlanta, Ga. Most Careful Attention for Eggs During Summer Eggs are easily secured in March, April and May. It Is during the three months which follow that the flock requires most careful attention. Twelve g years results at the Stores contest showed that a normal well-fe- d hen should lay within seven of as many eggs In June, July and August as she laid In March, April and May. The average 'cost of feed for a hen Is approximately 10 cents per month. This feed bill naturally run less In summer months than In winter months. During the hot summer months many high producing cows are prevented from giving their normal supply of milk by carelessness of their owner In not supplying some one of the many necessary comforts for hot weather milk ''and butterfat production. One of the most common of these is the furnishing of drinking water. A cow in milk requires about 100 pounds, or 12.5 gallons, of water dally, and heavy producing cows frequently double this amount. During hot weather a cow must have the normal supply of water and an added amount necessary for adjusting her supply from normal to hot weather needs. .The question of how often cows should be watered, when they are not kept with a constant supply before, them, varies with the condition of the weather, kind of feed, etc. It Is safe to say, however, that cows in milk should have water at least three times a day.
