CANUTE PETi;KON. As a rule the people in the southern part of this Temple District are very willing to contribute of their means to assLt m the erection of the temple. A recent trip, however, had shown that the people were unable to turnout the ready means they were unable to dispose of their stock, but as soon as the way opens their donations will be forth coming. There are many reasons for believing that the Manti Temple is destined to be one of the most, if not the most important in the Territory. Geographically speaking this is the very centre of the territory. The county is well populated, produce is cheap here, heive people coming from abroad can live comparatively economical. Persons, too, living in opposite parts of the Territory, will find it to their interest to meet here and perform their ordinances. Tne.e can be no question but what the patronage of the Temje will he very gieat, as in the very nature of things and according to the theory of our religion it must he so. The work of rearing Temples is certainly wne of the ino4 important works of the Latter-da- y Saints. Li ic ternE. rlilO ATE C ft th e of , II odd! GRANDE RAILWAY. If this work is undertaken in the proper spirit it will be a source of delight for the bishop to vi it his ward and every person thereof. The wisdom of the world and our own judgment should convince us that lie will make the best ruler who exerts himself to become acquainted thoroughly with his people. Saints ought to become skilled in t lie science of civil government as well as in the principles of true theology. It is a falacious idea to think that a person will renounce his religion as soon as lie becomes learned in law and the literature of the world. If a person is of the seed of Ephiaim, and if he will comply implicitly with the injunctions of the Gospel he will stand by his faith, no matter how scholarly he may be. Dated: May 1st, 1nsc COTTAGE -- ORGAE3 i' desired that he might be prompted by the spirit of God while attempting to address the people. It is ever a cau-- e of regret when we cannot enjoy the presence of the leading authorities, but bad they been present they would unquestionably have been pleased in eeing that every bishop in the stake is at his post in this Conference. This shows a practical working and a live interest. The idea of holding conferences among the Latter-daSaints, was given by revelation, hence from their very origin and from the good which naturally results from them, they cannot but be of the greatest benefit to the people. The speaker read from the Gospel ot St. John 15 chap. 12th to the 23 verses inclusive and showed by deductions and from the teachings and admonitions of the Savior and from the nature and theory of our religion that the Saints cannot consistently expect to escape persecution. The Savior taught his desciples to love one another. He also assured them that if they were of the world, the world would love them ; but because they had been chosen by him and because they had elected to follow the plain will of God they would be by the world and the unrighteous would oppress them. Upon reading the decision of the Supreme Court in the Snow case, the speaker had felt a momentary indignation and chagrin hut on reflection and viewing the matter carefully, all n was dispelled and he felt that the matter was only an step in the great'pur-posof the Lord. Lldir A. II. HENRY BEAL admonished the people not to become restive, nor to leave the con'erence before the final dismissal, because if they did so they would not be satisfied with their own conduct. The speaker related an incident which oc-cur- ed at Ephraim last Sabbath when the local authorities were called upon, or were compelled from the nature of the case to excommunicate a young man from the church. Shortly after the formula of severing this young man from the church had been gone through with another young man wyas called to the stand to speak. He responded and in closing bore a powerful testimony to the truth and potency of the Gospel. Now which of the two ought the Samts to one is ceremulate?
