SENATE: Kept Busy All Factors Must Be Operated Efficiently The hen has long shared honors with the cow as being the worlds most efficient machine. This model of the mechanics of the hen will give some idea of the egg factory. When eggs are laid on consecutive days, the yolk of one egg is control of atomic energy during a busy week which also saw the upper chamber agree to an extension of the draft and take up the question of continuing OPA ATOM Prepared by the senate committee on atomic energy headed by Senator McMahon (Dem., Conn.), the bill for developing and controlling atomic power provides for a special commission possessing sole authority over the production or other and storage of A military liaison board would be set up to consult with the commission on army and navy applications of atomic energy, with the right to appeal to the President in case of disputes. The government would be granted a monopoly over the materials, patents and production facilities used in converting atomic energy and it would be authorized to acquire stockpiles of uranium ores and other necessary materials and license their transfer. Besides the special commission, a committee of scientists and technicians would be formed for advisory purposes and a permanent congressional committee would be created to check atomic policies. DRAFT Acting on permanent selective service legislation to supplement current temporary regula- bs discharged from the ovary about 30 minutes after the laying of the previous eggs. Hens must be bred with the internal capacity to produce eggs if they are to be profitable. But the best bred hen in the world will not be profitable unless well housed, well fed and well treated. No other farm animal will respond as rapidly to proper or unproper management. In order that eggs complete the cycle every 24 hours, all working parts of the hen must be properly functioning. This takes a ration along with ideal condiwell-balanc- ed tions. There are several methods that have proven satisfactory in protecttrees ing young against rabbits and other animals. Tar chicken be wire may stretched to circle the tree. An effective guard may be made from discarded garden hose, which may then be wrapped around the young trees. This guard may be used year after year, requires no fastening as the hose will always retain its cylindrical shape. The use of paper is not generally recommended as it will not last long and some animals will find little difficulty in chewing through the tar paper. Improved Safer Hitch For Power Machines I CAN USE MY TRACTOR NOW WITH ANY STANDARDIZED MACHINE MASTER SHIELD AND PTO CONVERSION , PACKAGE If a farmer purchases a new tractor or standardizes the power takeoff of his old tractor with conversion packages, furnished by all manufacturers of farm implements, greater convenience, economy and safety will result. These are available at A.S.A.E. hook-up- s all dealers for any make of tractor. Rabbits Prove Big Forage Consumers Young jack rabbits consume some dry feed as early as five days after birth, according to Arizona station studies. Following weaning, at three weeks of age a rabbit consumes an average daily ration equal to 2 to 4 per cent of its body weight. From 5 to 14 weeks of age, the food consumption averages 6 per cent of the light weight of the animal. They reach their maximum food consumption between 14 and 26 weeks of age. On this basis, it would not take many rabbits to clean up an acre of growing crops. - LABOR: Maritime HurdL Senator Ellender (Dem., La.) receives the pen with which President act proTruman signed school-lunc- h viding federal aid to states furnishing nutritional fare for pupils. Sec- labor disputes were expected to be the last major strike threats of the year, they also shaped as among the knottiest, with the government prepared to mobilize the army, navy and coast guard to keep Uncle Sams great merchant marine operating. Irked over the government and industrys concentration on settlement of the demands of six CIO and one independent union embracing 214,000 members, the AFL Seafarers and their affiliated Sailors union of the Pacific threatened to walk out also unless consideration be given to their wage and working demands. Like the CIO, the AFL asked for higher wages, larger overtime pay and reduction in working hours. The AFLs determination to press its demands in the midst of government and industry deliberations with the CIO indicated that the Seafarers and Sailors union would respect CIO picket lines in the event of a shipping strike. This presaged a break in AFL ranks since the AFL Longshoremens chief, Joseph P. Ryan, condemned the CIO maritime leaders as threatening to pull off a strike to increase their prestige. Besides its interest in keeping communication lines open, the government was vitally concerned over the maritime negotiations because it owns 80 per cent of the ships now being operated. Republican congressional primaries offer a real clue to PAC strength since the CIO organization could hardly be expected to muster telling influence in the ranks of the traditionally conservative GOP. By decisively defeating Attorney-GenerKenny in the Democratic and besting him by a wide primary margin in the GOP vote, Governor Warren emerged as a GOP hope- al ful for the 1948 presidential race. As the keynoter to the 1944 Republican convention in Chicago, HI., the big, personable Californian made an immediate hit and could have had tiie vice presidential nomination for t the asking. WHITE HOUSE: New Appointments In what was interpreted as a move to please liberal elements, President Truman nominated Sec. of the Treasury Fred M. Long an administraas congressman, tion handy-ma- n head of the Reconstruction Finance corporation, Director of War Mobilization and Reconversion and finally treasury secretary, Vinsons presence on the bench is expected to tilt the scales in favor of the lib- eral wing. Vinsons appointment was one of a flurry announced by the President. John W. Snyder, conservative St. Louis banker and personal adviser to the President, was shifted from the post of reconversion director to the vacant treasury seat. John L. Sullivan, assistant secretary of the navy for air, was appointed undersecretary of the navy. Warren R. Austin, Republican senator from Vermont and leader in the movement to get the GOP to adopt a broader foreign policy, was appointed U. S. representative to the United Nations security council.
