Ittll-btin- g Acufe Rheumatic Fever Acute rheumatic fiver is primarily a disease of childhood and young adulthood. It is usually not seen in very young childhood, and has lately been the subject of much research and study. It is now known that there is a strong relationship between certain types ol streptococcal gerin infections and rheumatic fever. Three percent of all streptococcal infections are followed by the complication of rheumatic fever. Generally, rheumatic fever follows a streptococcal sore throat by about two or three weeks. The easiest recognized manifestations are tender, swollen large joints and evidence of heart trouble found bv the doctors examination. Another evidence of rheumatic fever is St. Vitus Dance, or chorea. Cases that are are difficult to diagnose not clear-cu- t and the diagnosis is achieved by putting many evidencea of disease together in a pat tern. This can only be done by a physician. Whereas several years ago rheumatic fever was often never diagnosed and many crippled hearts resulted, nowadays there is a problem of in many cases, and children being needlessly put to lied for several weeks with their activity being curtailed unjustly. The public commonly makes a diagnosis, or assumes rheumatic fever to be present, because of questionable fevers and vague leg aches. The error is compounded when a blood sedimentation test is found to be elevated. These symptoms alone are not sufficient to diagnose rheumatic fever being present. Admittedly, there are a certain number of cases that develop heart disease without being recognized, but usually this means lack of medical care during and following a streptococcal infection. There is no specific test low-grad- e Farmers should rotate crops where possible so that grass crops do not follow grass crops. Otherwise grass pests may remain in the soil and more severly attack the second grass corn or small grain 'available at the present time that is diagnostic of rheumatic fever. The number of coses of iheumatiC fever each year seems to he deeie;e-mThis is felt to be due to the newel knowledge and prevention nua-uithat we now have available. With t from the initial attaik of i t ic" fever. the patient has an Mi chance that he will recover with no detectable heart damage or sm h a slight degree of damage that his phvi-ca- l act iv it y will not be rest re ted m anv wav. It is the patient with ree.iied of rheumatic fever who is left with the severely damaged heart. Treatment of rheumatic fever is still hemg subjected to research and analtherysis. Bed rest is an mu hallenged apy. However, there is now evidemf that in the past bed rest lias Ini n used for longer periods than are neeessarv Salicylate drugs and aspirin are also used under prox-- medical supervision. The latest treatment is the use ol the newer hormones such as Cortisone and the one known as ACIII. I he best treatment, or the best combination ol treatments, is still being studied throughout the world. More important than the ticatment of rheumatic fever, whir h is only part tially successful in some rases, is he prevention of the disease, which is veiy successful. The most important measure is the prevention of streptococ al disease. This is achieved through t lie daily administration of oral pc tin dim or sulfadiazine in small dosc-s-. Aimthri type of slowly absorbed penicillin u given in monthly injections. Any patient with definite rheumatic fcvei should continue this preventative therapy for a numlier of years. Contraiy tj some beliefs, the type of streptococ germ that causes rheumatic fever rniclj becomes penicillin resistant. g et hen-ma- r c c Prevention of subsequent attacks ol rheumatic fever is the most impoitanl In ail thing that can he done to prevent disease. Prevention of the initial attai l of rheumatic fever is accomplished by at least ten days of penicillin for any streptococcal inlection. Ircven-tioof subsequent attacks of rhcumatit fever is accomplished through the daily administration of penicillin or sull.ulia-zinunder the guidance ol a physician tlu-iap- j . i i V around The same clean-u- p home gardens, both vegetable and flower, often will reduce of insects. the carry-over PAIIOWAN TULLS Published and Printed at Parowan, Utah each Thursday Robert B.
