This is emphasized by Dr. George Knowlton, Utah State Agricultural College extension entomologist. He says that the new Miller Bill limits the amount of insecticides and residues other poisonous which can be present on crop and livestock products moving to market. This limit is a safe amount from the standpoint of tne people or livestock consuming the products. It is the least amount which can lx? counted on to give consistently good insect control when it is properly applied. Growers who violate government established tolerances may be headed for trouble. Dr. Knowlton says. Recently a California lettuce grower used an insecticide which was not allowed" on a lettuce crop. He used ii at a fairly strong dosage. Thin he shipped two carloads of his lettuce across state lines. The shipment was seized by government inspectors, con demned and destroyed. The remainder of the large crop rotted in the field after the grower had spent a lo-- . ol money and labor for production costs, the entomoligist reported. There is no need for farmers, fruit growers, or ranchers to have financial losses under the Miller Bill, which regulates the amount of residue which may remain on any d crop. If state and ne 1P56. RIDGE. and NADINE LOVE- IN THE DISTRICT i Plant spring grains early if you want high yields, advises Wallace D. Sjoblom, Iron Co. agent He savs tests by the Utah State Agricultural College Experiment Station and observations over the state have proved this. The alert farmer will want to make arrangements for his grain seed and plant it just as soon as the land can be perpared. High yield, disease resistance, and straw to prevent a stiff lodging are the main things that are desired in any grain variety for irrigated land. The folowing varities have been tested and are recom- mended for 1956 plantings m Utah: BARLEY: Bonneville is a high yielding variety that does especially well on fertile soil and with a good supply of irrigation water. For site3 with poorer soil or a limited water supply, Velvon is still a popular variety for spring plantings. It has smooth awns and fairly stiff straw. OATS: This grain will usually not produce as much ; acre frod barley un.r most conditions in the sta However, where oats is wa' Overland is a good van ty. It does well on good lor is smut resistant, and has short stiff straw. WHEAT: If wheat is ' ing planted in the spring ' irrigated land, Lemhi 53 a good variety. This is a soR white wheat with stiff strn" and considerable resistanci t smut. In choosing grain sxd, be sure it is free from noxiou weeds, has a high germii.a tion, and is of the desired variety. Certified seed is th. best. It guarantees high quality. A new bulletin on rcconi entitleo mended varieties, More Money From Your Field Crop, has recently been published by the USAC Louis A. Jensen, extension agronomist, is the authoi Copies of the bulletin may be obtained from the county office. The county a gent can also provide lists of local certified seed growers Pr i K .
