Show r R fa k 1 I 1 11 4 cz 1 r I 1 I 1 r 11 IE sugar beet eap exp experiments eri ments the results of 0 experiments with sugar beets by J J vanha banha and by H claassen have hato been summarized in the experiment station record in V canhas a experiments beets cwi abal were gr grown 0 n 20 25 a itna it 30 20 cm apart in rows rowa 35 40 and 45 em cm distant the distance al allowed lovied each plant ranged from to 1350 iq sq cm the smallest yields were ere obtained from rom the 35 25 cm rows with wit h the th 0 plants pilots at intervals of 30 cm car planting the beets 30 cm apart in rows 45 cm distant gave nine much is the best yields mr air claassen Clan avren undertook to determine in ine the effect on the development ot of the plant ot of removing or injuring the leaves of sugar beets while the plants were still growing in one row the small inner leaves of the plant were entirely cut away in another row the larger outer leaves were removed while from all except the smaller inner leaves of the plants in a third row one halt half of the leaf surface was cut away and in a fourth row the leaves were mutilated in a manner approximating injuries due to ball the smaller inner leaves were soon boon replaced after their removal by a new growth the larger leaves were not replaced but the remaining ones made a good vigorous growth so that by the end of the season the ground gound was again well vell covered the injured loaves leaves remained green and fresh and the smaller inner leaves of these particular dicu ticu ir plants wore mere induced to make a better growth by this treatment the results showed that the removal of the leaves and injury to the some same had bad practically no effect on the sugar content but that it reduced the weight ot of the beets cutting away the inner leaves had the least effect it Is estimated from the data obtained that the removal or of the entire leaves or parts ot of the same me whether by hall ball or other vise may cause causa a reduction of 30 per cent in the weight of 0 the crop |
