A few days later, the housewife sued the store for damages. The company admitted its mistake, but insisted that merely removing somebody's coat was "not such a terrible thing." Tell us what to do. My dear Mary, this is really a predicament; your mother as well as your father is failing you. True, she did carry you youngsters through the hardest years, sacrificing and working for you, but she has no right now to Impose this disreputable and disagreeable man upon you. If he will not pull himself together, brace up, get a job any sort of job, and treat his children with the consideration they have so well earned, then I think you four are quite justified in asking that he live somewhere else. And yet, easy as that is to say, it is quite different to put into effect. Your mother will object strenuously to such a change; and you are all too young to feel free yourselves. So my advice is to take your mother into your councils, and tell her how disturbed you are that the loved home she did so much to save is threatened by this irresponsible man. Nag them both steadily and constantly. He did not help to raise you; now you get together and raise him. Stop being unreasonable, Dad. Dont use that tone, Dad. Say thank you to Mom, Dad. Go put on a clean shirt. Dad. Thats enough crabbing, Dad. He'll try not to pay attention. Hell have to. You'll find a variety of plastic and wood rings, beads and other shapes designed scientifically to meet this specific play need. Textures are the next interest. It's smart to have some of smooth plastic like a rattle, then a plush bear for contrast and a yielding rubber duck that's fun to squeeze. It's important, when choosing for these very young children, to avoid anything which might strain the baby's muscles. We were decent enough to him at first thinking he would get a job and contribute his share to the family finances and show by his attitude that he regretted his disgraceful abandonment of us years ago. He Doesnt Work But he hasnt done anything of the kind. He doesn't work, he criticizes everything, he wants the best of everything, he asks Joe and Lisa for money, and says openly that he is our father and that we ought to support him. This would be bad enough but mother's attitude makes it worse. She is a perfect slave to him, carrying in his coffee at ten oclock, expecting us to respect him, and reminding us every little while that he is our father, and that she promised to love and cherish him until death parts them. She washes his clothes, cooks what he likes, and won't let anyone murmur any criticism. Do you think we should put up with this? We have grown up without a father's help, protection or affection. We knew years of privation, while mother struggled day and night to support us. We have solgained happiness, vency, and the addition of this untidy, critical old man to our group ruins everything. Mother is 44, American born, my father is 50, t, A Smithsonian OCU, PANAMA Institution scientist is coming from Washington, D. C., to this little jungle village to examine a find of fossil bones that may extend knowledge of central America back a million years. The fossils are the first of their kind to be discovered in Panama or surrounding countries. Up to now, the rank growth of the tropical countries has hidden all traces of what the region was like before mankind appeared on the scene. While the find has attracted international interest among scientists, it has thrown the Indians of this out of the way community into a superstitious silence. They look with awe upon the ribs four feet long and the leg bones 15 times larger than human ones that have been uncovered. Some of the bones have been reasonably well identifed as belonging to a toxodbn, a beast which long ago disappeared from the worlds surface. It was about nine feet long and shaped like a rhinoceros. Other bones seem to be those of a giant ground sloth, which grew as much as 20 feet tall! Some of the bones have been completely turned to agate by their hundreds of thousands of years in the earth. They were found about six miles from here, in a spot known as Rincon Santo, which means in Spanish Sacred Corner. Possibly because of odd things that were found there in the forgotten past, the spot has always been looked upon by the Indians with reverence. Something in the soil of the land around the Sacred Corner acts upon buried objects to preserve them and turn them to stone. The actual discovery of the bones was made by Joaquin Carrizo, manager of a local hotel which has a unique facade made of petrified wood perhaps a million years old. He was hunting for additional wood pieces when he rame across the bones, some uncovered by erosion and some already washed into the bed of a former stream.
