Id, IS 14, was a memorable one in the American history. The British licet, consisting of thirty sail, appeared at the mouth of the Patapseo river with every intention of attacking the city of Baltimore. A ehort distance from the mouth of the river stood Fort McHenry, commanded by Lieut. Col. George Armistead. IT. S. A., a young man not over 84 years of age. He had under his command about 1.00T men. From the 12th to the 14th of September the enemy besieged the fort in every available way first landing many of their men within a few miles to the no-t- h of the fort, and finding they could gain no headway in this manner they returned to their vessels and kept up a perfect cannonade. In sheer desperation the British again landed a force of men in all about 1,200 but they were again repulsed by the intrepid fighting of Col. Armisteads men and finally boat a hasty retreat. The bombardment lasted about twenty-fiv- e hours, during which time from 1,500 to 1,800 bombs were thrown, but, singular to relate, they nearly all broke in fragments over the fort. In spite of the severe firing Col. Armistead only lost four men, and Of about twenty-liv- e were wounded. all that fought that day notone man is alive, though in 1878 one of the company of the Feneibles survived M. J. Cohen of Baltimore. The garrison at Fort McHenry on the 14th day of September consisted of one company United States artillery, commanded by Cupt. Kvatis; two companies of Sea Feneibles, the Washington artillery of Baltimore, the Baltimore Independent artillerists, the Baltimore F'encibles, a detachment of flotilla men, aud Col. George Armistead. George Armistead was born in Newmarket county, Carolina, Va. , on the 10th of April, 1780. He entered the army as a second lieutenant in 1790. He rose to the rank of major, 1813, and was breveted lieutenant-colone- l for gallantry at the capture of Fort George in May, 1813. lie had five brothers in the army during the same year, many of whose descendants now live. The vessels which attacked Fort McHenry were sixteen in number, five of them being bomb vessels, and for this reason it was all the more remarkable that the fort should have held out, as it was anything but bomb-prooKnowing this the general had sent Col. Armistead orders to surrender the fort as he considered it an impossible thing to resist such a large lleet with only 1,00;) men. Like Nelson at Copenhagen, Col. Armistead turned a blind eye to the orders, defended his fort, knowing that if he failed court-martistared him in the face. Nothing, succeeds however, like suocees, and of course all was forgotten when lie achieved such a gallant victory. The incessant firing of bombs, the clash of musketry, tho red glare in the heavens, the groans of the dying, the moaning of the wounded such was the scene which the flag waved over which inspired Francis Scott Key to compose our national song. The song was first published one week after the battle in the Baltimore American of Sept. 21, 1814, and from its pages the following extract is taken: This song was composed under the following circumstances: A gentleman had left Baltimore, under a flag of truce, for the purpose of getting released from tho British lleet a friend of his, who liad been captured at Marlborough. IF went as far as the moulli of the Patuxent and was not permitted to return, lest tho intended aiiack on Baltimore should bo disclosed. He was, therefore, brought up the bay to tho mouth of the Patapseo, where tim flag vessel was kept under guns of a frigate, tho Surpris'-- , and wa- - compel to witness tho bombardment of Fort McHenry, which the admiral had boasted ho would carry in a few hours, lie watched tho flag at the fort through the whole day with an anxiety that can be better felt than described, until tho night prevented him from seeing it. In the night he watched tho shells, and at early dawn his eye was again greeted by the proudly-wavin- g flag of his country." It was therefore while pacing his own ship, the Minden, that this song was composed. When Key was first taken prisoner he and his friend, Mr. Skinner, were brought before Admiral Cochran, who informed them that ho regretted ho could not accommodate them on his own vessel, the Royal Oak, but they would bo as we!! taken care of on bis son's vessel, the Surprise, where they were accordingly taken, but wero afterward conveyed to tho Minden, where Key composed this immortal song. All through tho long Eight Key could hesr the roar of as they tore through tho air, but no explosion followed, and he was left in painful doubt until dawn as 1o the fn'e of hi- - beloved e.iuntrv. 15 fore it was light enough he turned to see if his Hag was still there," and he was rewarded bv sceini' the boauti-u- l stars and stripes still floating on f. al s -- ben-eti- -l and Vitality Vigor to part of the qnickly Are given body b every Hoods Sarsaparilla.
