In wool prices are a shade higher, but the speculative demand has abated, and the demand for goods being still unsatisfactory, purchases of manufacturers are more moderate. Foreign trade has improved a little, but exports for the past three weeks from New York are still 9 per cent, below last years, while imports here show an increase of 6 per dent. The preliminary statements fof August show that the exports of breadsjujis, provisions, cattle, cotton and oil 'were 5S,577'338 smaller than for the saiqe month last year, or 23 per cent., bnt the last years exports for that month were exceptionally large. The stock market has been agitated by the failure of St. Paul to pay a dividend, mentioned q- week ago, and by the prompt formation of a syndicate of foreign stockholders to defend their interests. Wheat has been moderately active, with sales of 9 million bushels, and only one quarter net advance in price, while corn has declined ri cents, oats half q cent, and oil i olia cent. Pork products are higher, dressed hogs 10 cents and larcj 50 cents per 100 lbs. Cotton has advanc; ed a sixteenth with sales of 404,000 bales, and coffee half a cent withsales of 406,-00- 0 bags. Hides are steady, but leather as advanced fully one cent. The rapid advance of bar silver, fron) 43.50 to 44. 19 d. per oz, marks the increasing European demand for Indian products. Meanwhile, export of wheat Irom this country for July and August amount fo IS, 500, 000 bushels (lour included, against 35, 75, 000 bushels last year, and the supply remaining for export is probably about 24 million bushels greater than last years exports for the rest of the crop year. fhe business failures occuring throughout the country during the last seven days, as reported by telegraph, Friday, to R. Even the people of its owq State are becotqing convinced that there is nothing in Harrison to entitle him to laudation. The inteligence of the people is too advanced to permit him to make capital out of the fact that he can claiiq an illustrious grandfather. Every day the commonness of the man is being more fully established, and this fapt that he has many peers in Indianapolis detracts from the admiration with which it is endeavoured to have the people regard him. In addition to his lack of distinctive individuality he, unfortunately for his success in the race for President, has so long been regarded as a champion of corporations, with adverse views upon all questions involving the bettering of the condition of the laboring classes, that all members of the latter class regard his support by them as a suicidal policy. It matters not what his particular utterance was in reference to what he considered fair compensation for a laboring man, no attempt will be made to prove that Harrison ever favored the laborer receiving the major portion of the profits of his toil. His race prejudice is the only thing that can give him claim to prominence. Upon no other question has be evpr made a record worthy of mention. Bqt the mention of such a record is not calculated to win him many votes. I WEEKLY REVIEW OF TRADE. Correspondence Ensiun.J New York, Saturdiy, Sept, sa, 18S8. It has been a week of sensations in stocks and of npderate trading and changes in other speculative markets. The volume of legitimate business continues to improve, though less than many anticipate. Crop repons are altogether favorable as to corn, but less clear or satisfactory respecting wheat or cotton. The general average of prices has again declined slightly, and the fall since August 3t is nearly r percent., the advance in July and August having been about 2V per cent. I11 stocks, a severe reaction averaging $3 per share culminated last Saturday, and there has since been an average advance of $ 50 per share, with rapid rise in spme securities that had been sold lor future delivery on foreign account or otherwise. Bankers are somewhat d.sappointed because the movement of products, and the demand for money, do' not increase as rapidly as reports of large crops had led them to expect. But the ciop which is most important, in railroad or financial aspects, is not large; the yield of wheat is So to 90 million bushel short of a lull crop, with much uncertainty and very contradictory reports about the outcome in the spring wheat regions. Heavy rams, late in the season, have also injured cotton, certainly to some extent as tograde, and probably as to quantin', though no accurate estimate ot the injury can yet be made. That crop is unusually late, also, and in part of the South the disturbance caused by yellow, fever interrupts operations. But the feeling still prevails that a large business may be expected for the coming seasbn, though fuller supplies of money at Western and Southern centres may 'cause demands upon New York to be lighter than usual. Official reports show that the money in circulation o! all kinds was about. r,36t millions, September rst, against 1,321 millions a year ago, and the Treas ury has put out this month about $2,200,-i- x 0 more than it has taken in besides adding to circulation the' amount of gold and silver coinage. For the past week the addition to circulation has been and on Thursday 53,760,000 more bonds were purchased, 130 being paid for 4 per cent. The reports frqm interior points show that money is generally in ample supply, though there is some closeness at Cleveland and Detroit; the market is tight at Atlanta, and rates for commercial paper are higher at Philadelphia the best at 4! per cent. Collections have so far improved that complaints ate now ervfevv. For speculation, money here is in abundant supply, but for commercial rises the market is growing harder. Business is fair Iv active at all interior p mts repotting, and at most it is better than a year ago. Bnt while the pi im ipul centres report good and incieasmg trade, s the accounts from Several of unusual at the smaller towns in regions surrounding, suggest that distribution mav not be answering expectations It is still noteworthy that a feeling of great to the future prevails, and the iron market grows harder at Philadelphia though the Thomas Company stdl sells at SiS for No. 1.
