Show NOT JUST BIBLICAL BUT THE HUICHOLS OF MEXICO HAVE THEIR STORY OF FLOOD. Hermit Tribe of Indian Hold Peculiar Traditions Concern Ing Noah and Hit to Ark. Again the world la Indebted to the generosity of the late MorrI K. Jesup for the discovery of much Interesting history concerning the Hulchol Indians of old Mexico, among the things unearthed being a new version of the atory of Koah's ark and the deluge. Carl Lumboltz Is the scientist who was In charge of the expedition, and he not only obtained much Information, but gathered an Interesting collection of articles Illustrating the domestic and religious life of these In dians, the latter collection having Just been installed In the American Mu seum of Natural History at New York. The Hulchols have practically been an unknown race living In a remoto and almost Inaccessible valley In the wilds of the Sierra Madre, In the State of Jalisco. Mexico. They number some 4,000, and their habitation Is a territory about 40 miles long by 25 miles wide, walled In by steep moun tain barriers of from 5,000 to 8,000 flood was coming, she said; it waa not more than five days off. 'Make a box from the flgtrae as long as yourself and fit it with a good cover," she said. "Take with you five grains of corn of each color, five beans of each color, take also the fire and five squash stems to feed it with, and take with you a black female dog." The Indian did as Grandmother Growth had told him. On the fifth day he had the box ready and placed in it the things he was Instructed. Then ho entered, taking with him the dog, and the old put th cover on. Then she seated herself feet elevation. They live mostly In circular houses or huts made of loose stones and mud, covered with thatched roofs. Their sacred god houses are of similar shape, but much larger. They dress In garments of their own manufacture. Mr. Lumholtz was the first white traveler to visit and dwell for a year or more among this hermit race. The Hulchol ark is used as one of the extreme means of getting rain. In times of drought It Is set afloat. It consists of a hollowed log. A piece of (carved wood glued on the tip Is intended to represent deer horns; its .purpose is to entangle the craft in the bushes when the water subsides and thus to stop it. Inside the ark are grains of sacred corn in multiples of five. Here Is the Hulchol story of the ark and flood. Long ago, before the white man came to the country, a Hulchol was at work felling trees in the preparation of a field for planting, but each day he found that the trees he had cut down on the previous day had grown up again. Finally he discovered that it was an woman old Grandmother named Growth who kept restoring them. She is the mother of. the gods; the earth belongs to her, and she lives in the under world. All vegetation is her product, and she told the man that he was working in vain. A great . WHY HE DIDNT SEND THE SEATS. A leading actor, who is old enovgh not to consider himself a matinee idol, was somewhat surprised and pleased in an hotel a short time ago when a pretty girl stopped him in the corridor and presented him with a rose without saying a word. He was more surprised to receive a note the following day reminding him of the incident and asking him to send the giver of the flower two seats at the theater in which he was playing, as a memento of the occasion. My dear young lady, the actor replied, I should be glad to send you the seats you ask for, but on consultation with the manager of the theater I have been informed that the seats are all fastened down, and that he is opposed to having them sent away as souvenirs. The ark rode on the water one year toward the south, the next year toward the north, the third toward the west, and fourth toward the east, and the fifth year It rose upward and all the w'orld was filled with water. The next year the water began to subside, and the box lodged on a mountain where it may still be seen. The man took off the cover and saw that all the country was still full of water, but the macaws and the parrots made valleys with their beaks and the water began to subside. Then the land began to dry up and trees and grass sprang forth, aided by Grandmother Growth. The man lived in a cave and found an Indian woman. They were married and the man had a large family and by and by his sons and daughters married, and thus the Huichol people were created. w-it- Thankful. hope your constituents are grateIt was close to midnight, and al- ful to you for what you have done for though she had yawned a dozen time them.
