Show 4B Sun Advocate Emery County Progress Smart Shopper Tuesday October 12, 2004 Journey across America takes Hurley through Utah Some think that Route 6 as Americas byway, a local road that meanders across the nation from the tip of Cape Cod to southern California. The highway takes almost a horizontal route until it hits California and then dramatically heads south. But through Utah, it enters the state near Green River and heads north through Emery and Carbon counties as it heads off to- wards the Nevada desert. Price ranked one of the cities with the highest elevation along his . trip. Joe Hurley is a journalist from Connecticut and discovered the beauty of Route 6 as he walked across Connecticut in 1999 with photographer Dave Harple. Their trip was documented daily with stories and photos. This popular series st spawned the idea for a walk and so in March Hurley, now retired headed west on his 3,600 mile venture. Hurley is discovering America foot by foot and started his walk across Route 6 to bring awareness of the historic highway trying to preserve the unique cultural and historical heritage along the coast-to-coa- longest ever established highway the nation. He walks an average of 20 miles a day so his journey through Emery and Carbon counties took about eight days, stopping for the evenings in coast-to-coa- st in Green River, Price and Helper. He was down to about 900 miles when he hit Price last week. Hurley continues his role as a reporter and submits photos and stories of local sites and people of interest to national media. According to a U.S. Route 6 tourism association newsletter, Hurley was quoted stating, Well search for the heartbeat of the nation at the start of the Century. Sometimes well travel off our path to bring you offbeat and inspiring glimpses of America. Well scare ourselves silly in the roller coaster Capital of the World, and plunge into the depths of coal mines. Well explore canyons, walk across Death Valley and touch a glacier. Well visit Boys Town and ghost towns. Well trek through 14 states and more than 500 communities. Well taste maple syrup in New England, pizza in Chicago, bread in Iowa and a burrito in Los Angeles (and well be packing plenty of anti acids.) There was more at stake than Hurleys visit, as the board of directors' are using his trip to measure community interest to determine the future locations of regional museums and visitor centers. Hurley was greeted with open arms in Price as Kathy Hanna-Smit- h organized a meeting with city officials and chamber of commerce officials. Smith walked with Hurley from Price to Helper and was able to share the vision of the area with him. However, president of the Route 6 association was not impressed with the reception in Green River. He is quoted 21s1 changed somewhat since the Of,all the hundreds of towns across the nation that Joe has visited. Green River is the only one that did not put out a welcome mat. A couple lodges in Green River did provide a room and meals for Hurley and his traveling as saying, 1950s and 1960s. But what he is that people in small rural towns are very much the same as they were 40 years ago. The 60 year-ol- d journalist said his trip is being pri- -' found y runner, turned walker said the gas prices have been fairly constant during his trip but the price of sodas in vending machine cost about 35 cents in the Midwest, high out here, but he was paying upwards to $1 .50 in New York. vately funded, and he hopes to complete it without having to seek corporate sponsorship cross-countr- of the funding comes Some through selling his stories to newspapers across the states.
