Show 2A Emery County Progress, Castie Dale, Utah Tuesday, October 12, 1999 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month The Emery County tic Violence Coalition soring activities this month to make people aware of domestic violence and that it is a problem in Emery County. Angel pins are also being sold to raise needed funds for victims of domestic violence. They are available from coalition members. The coalition consists of representatives of various local agencies who deal with family violence in one way or another. Their goal is to educate themselyes and the community about domestic violence and its effects on families and neighborhoods. They also coordinate existing ser Domesis spon- those who stay. vices and identify what vices are needed. Domestic violence is seen ser- Help is available to victims of domestic violence. Safety of victims is the number one priority. Victims can call 911 for any emergency situations. A womens shelter is located in Price. Transportation for Emery County arrangements can be made for emergency housing for men. Assistance is available in obtaining protective orders, counseling for victims and in all areas of the social strata. Background and income dont determine who will become a victim. Every 15 seconds, a woman is battered in the U.S. Battering is the single mzy or cause of injury to women and it is more fre- quent than auto accidents, muggings and rapes com- bined. Fifty percent of homeless women and children in this country are fleeing domestic violence. Women who leave their batterers are at a 75 percent greater risk of being killed by the batterer than CEU Trucking and children, assessments of needs, and referrals to Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition is sponsoring a Program in the Park in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness month: Oct. 13, 12 to 1 p.m. at the Castle Dale City Park. Everyone is welcome there is no fee. Lunch will be provided by the coalition The guest speaker will be Diane Stuart, State coordinator on the Governors Cabinet Council on domestic violence. There will be Inspirational Songs by Marilyn Harber, a local song writer and novelist.
