Many hunters share the expectation of hunting and possibly harvesting a trophy size buff elk. since thenit went from limited entry management to general season just last year. The fad is, many hunters rry not even see elk. Only a small percentage will have the opportunity for a shot, aod the chances for harvesting a large buff are low. The Range Creek elk herd occupies fenced and gated private land areas as wefl as chunks of land encompassed by the Nutter and Pagano Ranch cooperative wildlife management units during September and Odober. Except for a few stragglers, the herd will be largely inaccessible to the public land hunter. Even with binoculars and spotting scope, the herd will be virtually undetectable to the average sportsman. Those who opt to hunt public land on the unit will be in for a Frustrating challenge. For one thing, the 1995 edition of the BOOM 1: 100,000 scale surface management status map incorrectly several thousand color-code-s acres on the unit as state land. in fad, those areas are priowned.
