But, being a shy boy ... I know, I know, some of you will never believe that ... but I was only three, and its true. Anyway, being shy, I was not the most friendly of grandsons. One day while grandma was there, I came into the house hungry as a bear, and started to look for something to eat. Then I was at an early age when, on the front lawn of our home, I heard one of my older brothers use the words, Youre damned rights. Youre damned rights! Now, that statement had a ring of authority behind Well, dont you think youre a big man, she smiled, as she caught the drift of what was going on. Without hesitation, I turned my head in her direction and responded, Youre damned rights!" The smile disappeared instantly, and I knew I had said something wrong when it was replaced with the same look I got I remembered the cookie jar, which from Mom when I was about to get a Grandma had helped keep full while spanking. I repeated it over and over to myself. Yes, anyone who said those words would certainly command instant respect and authority. And, from that moment on, I determined whenever the opportunity arose, I would use those very words to establish a position of respect and authority. Now, in my lifetime, I only remember seeing my Grandmother Norwood one time. On a rare occasion, she came to our house from her home in Idaho, and spent a couple of weeks. Are you uncomfortable with that statement? If you are, is it because I use the word prostituted? Especially with the word love. Then hoyf uncomfortable are you with the way lov is prostituted? Listen to the words of songs, the conversation of people. How often does someone say she loves someone then proceed to abuse and put that person down, to just use that person for herhis own enced. We sometimes try substituting words with similar but less inclusive meaning. One of the latter is caring. If I care for someone in any degree I will do things I would never do otherwise. As one cares more for another; whether marriage partner, family member or friend, my sense of being willing to be and do for that person deepens. I use my mind to figure out how or what is the best way to do it but it really rises out of my inner person, my spiritual part of who I am. I will not do it out of a sense of have to. The doing may be letting the other person free by not doing wants. Knowledge, patience, honesty, trust, humility, hope and courage. We use these qualities when caring for any human being, any creature. But most especially they come into play between family members, husband and wife and friends. Only when these are being used each day can a person say she loves another Children and others can then know they are good and be caringloving persons themselves. Think again. That title belongs to the humble ant. Ants were around when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and they will probably outlast us. In reproductive ability or feats of strength, ants have no equal. An African Driver ant queen can produce forty million offspring a year; and may live for twenty years. Some worker ants can lift and carry an object fifty times their weight, which is equivalent to a man carrying a small car. Ant have an admirable work ethic. Every ant does its job twenty-fou- r hours a day, seven days a their clear-cuttin- g lifestyle isnt appreciated. To control Harvester ants, level the mound with a shovel and saturate the area with a solution of Diazinon or Dursban. This is, best done in early morning when ants are less active. U.S. Congress is committing fiscal child abuse and I are expecting a new baby. Needless to say, were excited. But just the My wife other day we received some bad news: our unborn child is already very deeply in debt. According to Recent estimates, a child bom this year will pay $100,000 in federal taxes just for interest on the $5.5 trillion of national debt-bill- s run up by politicians before the baby was even bom. That doesnt include one penny to defend the country during the kids lifetime. It doesnt take into account state or local taxes, schools or roads. Nor does my unborn childs indebtedness include even one cent of payroll taxes he or she will pay for Social Security. Those payroll taxes will be grabbing a bigger and bigger bite from future gen- v erations. And that bite will only get worse if politicians in Congress fall to take action now, during good economic times. The times are good. We know this because we hear every politician under the sun grab credit. Pollsters often ask, Who deserves credit for the good economy: the President or the Congress? Some choice! But one polling outfit, Rasmussen Research, asked the question a different way. They gave respondents three choices: President, Congress or American business. Interestingly, more than 70 percent said American business deserves the credit. Yet, politicians live in their own world. Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia advocates spending the money Congress made by managing the economy. But Congress isnt a business that makes profits. All of the money currently pouring into the federal purse comes from you and me in taxes. With all the extra tax dollars rolling in, politicians have an opportunity to clean up their fiscal mess. But teaching an old dog new tricks is easier than teaching career politicians fiscal responsibility. Now, Congress has declared an emergency in Washington. Has violence broken out? Are we on the verge of war? Walking on nuclear eggshells? No, none of that. The specific emergency declared by Congress is the 2000 census. Now the census isnt exactly an emergency.
